bitter, ok....but how does that concern you? - or does that fact that people like me who wade in our bitterness only become more and more motivated to affect change? I am very excited at the posibilities that new liberal leadership will bring to Canada IF they choose a good leader...not the current placeholder, who is a quasi-autocrat.

liberals affecting change you say? thats a new one..definately sounds interesting!

I agree about the daycare thing.. I hate it...

The solution to daycare is simple. If you cant afford to have kids... DON'T

There's one thing to understand with the media, is that it should be free. Allowing a government to control the information about it's policies and decisions ultimately leads to corruption, abuse of power, and misinformation being presented to the public.

Being a politician is a tough job, but you have to be accountable for the choices you make, because you're entrusted to make them for all of the citizens. If you allow the politicians to choose who gets to relay the information about policy, you essentially choose what gets released to the public. Just look at Fox News, the beakon of informative, investigative, and unbiased opinion that it is as a prime example.

I can live with a little bias, but what I can't live with is in the masses of people who only understand and believe what the government tells them to.

Sorry jay, I think you're really on the wrong side of this issue.

The government is not comtrolling the media...

He is deciding who gets the scoop and who doesnt. The news still gets out. Some in the media are whining simply because they wont be the first to get the scoop which is important in the media business.

Dude, Fox News is getting the scoop in the United States right now. Harper could potentially just copy/paste the exact same scenario in Canada if he's allowed to choose which reporters are in his press room, obviously you can see that scenario playing out.

Choosing who is in the press room is choosing what gets reported...Obviously you're more likely to answer questions that point to the positive or potentially positive outcomes of your policy rather than justify the negative ones, and the reporters who ask the positive ended questions are the ones who will be given those press passes.

Besides, in a Democratic society, Government is suppost to be as transparent as possible, so controlling the timing of the release of that information to the selected few who share your belief system add just a little bit of opaqueness to the overall transparency of government.

Personally, I think that every good journalist is automatically anti-establishment. Working hard to find the flaws in policy makes for responsible government, and works for the benefit of all the citizens.

Hey, I'm not claiming that the liberals weren't corrupt. But what I am saying is that the press was hard on them when they did get caught and rightfully so. But you always have to afford the press the chance of holding the politicians accountable, and if Harper doesn't want to speak to anyone but his hand picked propeganda team then I think it shows a huge breakdown in communication with the public on the side of the government. Which is not a good thing.

This is why I can live with a little bias over an excommunicated public by the hands of a governing party.

Sorry Jayx, but choosing who gets the scoop also means manipulating how the news will be reported. By attempting to dodge the press gallery, Harper is actually making his supposed bias problem worse. With nothing of substance to report on (because Harper won't talk to them) the liberal media outlets are forced to play the conspiracy theory, innuendo angle far more than if Harper had actually done the interview in the first place. Instead of scheduling interviews, Harpers press handlers are going to wind up spending their time denying every story based on rumour that comes out. Playing defence all the time will eventually erode the nation's confidence in his policies.

The media has played a big hand in taking away our freedoms. Just look at how they twist every little event into a public frenzy. It is the media's over reaction that then causes public hysteria that then causes politicians to pass oppressive laws.

Im 100% for a free and responsible media. I think those who understand the media and politics also understand why harper is treating them the way he is. Canadian politics has been heavily biased to serve a left wing agenda and one has to look no further than the CBC in order to see this. Even the so called "conservative leaning" outlets are actually centre or slightly left of centre.

And where does the Canadian public sit on most issues Jay, centre, and slightly to the left of centre?

That's what I thought.
