Maybe its because of family, political, and/or economic ties that more 'importance' is being given to the conflict in the Middle East.

If a life is a life, then why are we not hearing more about Africa? There are probably more deaths/day in Africa than any other area in the world, yet politicians are not jumping at the same rate.

the reason why theres so much involvement in the current conflict is because there are alot of foreign nationals suddenly caught in this conflict. lebanon is known as the switzerland of the middle east and this current escalation is something very sudden unexpected and worrying.

Research, military development, technology (Israel is considered the second silicone valley - all of latest Intel chips/technologies including Centrino and the new one to be out soon were developed in Israel), trading partner, and the only real ally in the middle east - Russia has influence on everyone else in the area, the US only has Israel...there's much more stuff actually without going into details.

lol the only thing Israel doesn't have is oil lol

Geez... I can't believe this thread has veered way of course. I totally thought Dima was being sarcastic with his crazy statement. You can't come to that conclusion, including selective quotes and articles from here and there. That's as stupid as just because Howard Stern is and calls himself "The King of all Media", you can't take that and conclude that Jews control the media. It's just as rediculous. I don't care to read any more examples, we're in a new century now.

The UN is keeping its distance for many reasons. They are a united front. The countries the UN represents have mixed feelings in this situation. Many arab states for the first time are siding with Israel (by not siding with with Hezbollah, or if you just prefer, not siding with Hezbollah).

It is very lucid worldwide, that Hezbollah started this war, and started with very obvious intention to escalate this to where it is now. The world has seen what happened when Hamas was behind the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit, for the purpose of extorting Israel for the return of thousands of prisoners. Hezbollah saw this as their opportunity. So they did the same, and there you have it. They did this upon themselves, fully intentionally. Unfortunately their plan is backfiring, and are not getting the sympathy nor support of the world they were hoping for. I've been to southern Lebanon, and saw the control they have over its people. The Lebanese army has virtually no presence in southern Lebanon, it's all Hezbollah, and they pledge for the total destruction of Israel. It's a religious army, "Army of God" is what Hezbollah means, and Jews are their enemy no matter what.

The Lebanese army are not helping Hezbollah at all. They don't like them either.

No peaceful army or militia that is part of a country's government, goes into another country, kidnaps and holds him/her prisoner for extortion (soldiers or not).

I feel for for all my Lebanese friends and family in the middle east. My heart goes to all of them, and hope this confrontation ends soon, for all of mankind's sake.

Unhappy

I think the intention of this thread was for us to gain perspective on how the people from Lebanon as well as Karim are feeling at this moment (i.e. the evacuation, the fighting, etc.).

I am aware that people are untitled to their opinions and views about the situation going on over there. But after reading most of the posts in this thread, I (and the other TAs who may have the same sentiment) think that all this verbal sparring about politics/war should be posted on another thread.

We should if anything use this thread to let Karim, and the many innocent people in Lebanon know that our thoughts and prayers are with them. My heart does go to all those living in fear and suffering in Lebanon.

Wow to this thread...just WOW. I'm not even going to comment on most of what's been said. Those of you who know me well already know what I'm thinking.

In regards to Karim...thanks for the update Lars. I'm glad to hear that him and his father got out of there safely. I bet Katy was extremely worried.
