The download kept stopping at random points indefinitely. I'll give it another try later.

7) Mirco De Govia - Voller Sterne (Mirco De Govia Remix)

I don't know about this track being considered "timeless" or "proper" It's pretty much cheesey anthem trance, but it was definately well-placed in your set. Sprinkling an underground set with a little cheese can add more flavor, but a set full of cheese is disgusting.

I'll definately be listening to this is my car and getting back to you with it (probably not so quickly since I have a lot of other sets queued in my car). It's one of the most solid T/L's I've seen from an amateur DJ on this site spinning trance.

A lot of trance DJs are hung up on playing what everyone else is playing or playing anthems back2back, but I'm glad you decided to think differently than the pack. You've earned a lot of respect points from me.

Now the only thing I don't like is your presentation. Calling your mix "Proper Trance" only makes you as pompous as the other djs spinning only big anthems and whatnot. You can make this your general style, but making it out to be better than anything else is pretentious. Kinda like the name "progressive" for genres.. just plain stupid.

You are entitled to that opinion, but for me 'Voller Sterne' is the best track on Mirco's Chronoscale album which is why I chose it and it fit well which you've already said.

Indeed I am an amateur bedroom dj and might I add an obsessive one at that. Also, I'll always be an amateur because my true passion is civil engineering which I'm currently going to school for so you might notice some technical errors, but nothing too drastic.

Oh nooez! Please read my entire first post again. If you don't feel like it then I'll paraphrase here: Proper trance is a genre of music and not some title I made up. It used to be produced a lot back in the early to mid 90's. Only now did I ponder the question of how that music would sound like in today's times, hence the whole point of this thread.

I would have to disagree.

"Proper trance" was a term coined by UK tranceaddicts to seperate cheesey top40 trance (the epic, anthem, and hands up junk) vs its underground styles (goa, acid, dark, ect), with no claim to a genre or style of trance. "Proper" is the UK way of saying something's cool, good hot, bad (in a good way) ect.

Even though it may be a legit title for a DJ set album, it's about as lame as calling a set "Cool Tracks." (but with a nose-in-the-air twist by saying its "proper".) Actually "Cool tracks" sounds a lot better hahah.

Your set looks like a mixture of psychadelic trance, goa, progressive trance, and ambient trance (If you want to classify it genrewise).

Anyway, bickering over genres makes us look like pompous, pretentious know-it-all fuckwits.. Let's just play good music and keep it at that.

Hey call it whatever you want.. It's one helluva solid tracklist.

The mix was good, mate, this was a good idea.

Now, I dont want to create a topic about this so I'll just ask it here if it's okay:

Rebel9, have you heard these two tracks:

Amphasis - Helix (It's on Goa Head Vol. 13)
Amphasis - Slice (On Human Arrangements)

If so, what do you think of them?
Helix sounds like No Limits by Overdog.
Slice sounds so cool... Reminds me alot of Metroid Prime with those sounds echoing in the background, and it's all hypnotic with the bassline and all.

No it isn't.

The use of "proper" here means trance which is true to what trance was originally about. It isn't an actual genre as such- the correct one would be "Classic Trance", a name awarded retrospectively when there became new and different trance sounds. Stevieboy hasn't actually made a set of Proper Trance, but he's made a set of trance records which stay true to what Classic Trance is about, and so can be described as "proper" trance.

seriously, though, there's a difference between anthem trance DJs claiming to be progressive. That's pretentious. There are plenty of pretentious people on TA.. most have this romantic notion of a trance 'had and lost', the kind from early-to-mid-90s. There are also those who just want to hear Classic Trance because they prefer it to the current 'Trance'. I see this as the latter, more of a pragmatic 'Lets try and find the old in the new' versus whining that 'the new sucks'.
