3 day in review:

Day 1: computer became unresponsive, yet it looked cool.
Day 2: more of the same.
Day 3: Windows has seemed to figure itself out if that makes any sense, computer is running extremely well, the sidebar is fantastic, the windows switcher 3D is really cool although it only seems to work for a few times and then reverts to an 2D alt-tab looking thing after a while.
Startup is much faster than xp especially after log on and connecting the wireless is instantaneous.

I can NOT for the life of me find a way to sync my BlackBerry to Outlook in Vista. It's just not happening.

Waves doesn't seem to be working either, but I suppose I can overlook that for now..

i really, really, really like how they have placed a list of active services into task manager... and also listed them along with the PID of the controlling lsass.exe or svchost.exe process. watch what happens when shitty malware tries to pretend it's a legit svchost.exe and everything connecting on the net can be tracked from a netstat -ano to the PID.

Windows Vista RC1 64 is running on my machine right now, and SURPRISINGLY well.

I was convinced running the 64 bit version would be enough to make me want to just take a peek, and then forget about it, but my machine was built for it and the only driver I have had to find was for my onboard audio card. HP service gave me beta drivers and they work.

Now, if only M-Audio would support my delta audiophile 2496, I would be a happy camper.

Also, Nero wont work, so I'm looking for a burning software if anyone knows of something I can try.

If I have a centrino duo processor, should I run the 64 or 32 bit? my mind says 32 to be safe, but if 64 runs better on it (since the centrino duo is 64 bit, right?) I should probably run that. Thanks

Before you do anything, make sure ALL your hardware, has 64 bit drivers. Collect them all, by either searching for them on the net, or by contacting your hardware manufacturers, and getting them that way.

Then once vista is running, go to control panel/ add hardware, then point the wizard to the folder with your new 64 bit drivers.

I had to search for my sound card driver, M-audio has a beta driver for 64 bit, but its still not working. Vista seemed to pick up my video card fine.

My webcam may not work for a while, and my drivers for my MIDI controller arent working either, but I think M-audio has them for 63 bit, havent searched yet. Still trying to tweek the little bugs out of this setup.

Over all, Im still impressed 64 bit conversion is going THIS smoothly. I was expecting chaos.

Few screen shots of RC1 64 bit running some what well on my machine. Still cant get the beta ATI drivers to work, but despite what Vertigo said, my video adaptor has absolutely NO issues with the windows areo, even with the windows driver which isnt the right one.

The memory requirement is pure comedy. im using 325mb currently with windows 2000, winamp, firefox, amsn, diskeeper, symantec antivirus, nvidia drivers and utorrent.

I think ive decided that XP will be the last windows i use at home. I dont intend on using this pile of garbage, or buying a new PC for the priviledge of running it either.

I hope MS does the decent thing and continues it's 2k support, as it's by far the best OS they've made.

Hopfully by next year i'll have learned enough on Linux to switch to Suse for 90% of my use and use 2k for the other 10%.

Goodbye Windows.

I will not even make the switch to Vista, I read a lot of stuff about it requiring that you have a video card and a monitor that supports HDCP. Its a very strict copy protection scheme thats hardware based, If the hardware isnt HDCP compliant, any HD video you download and try to watch will get downgraded to a lower quality.

Coup, any security problems with 2k? I mean, xp has been exploited by many worms and such, are there many exploits for 2k? Does Microsoft still provide regular updates for 2k?

Just a bit out of the loop and curious. I might get a job as some sort of computer technician next week, i'm supposed to know all this stuff.
