I think that if you are straight with him (as in, telling him DIRECTLY that you're only interested in a friendship) that there is no problem in being friends with him. but you must make sure not to send mixed signals so no flirting whatsoever etc. I've been friends with guys before who've liked me without a problem. Except many guys start acting like 4 year old when they realize nothing is going to happen. But if he's really a nice, cool guy like you say, then you probably don't need to worry about that good luck with it, let me know how it goes
