The way I look at it is, if I'm working, then I should be getting paid.

Its confusing how you always hear:
Don't do it for the money or else you won't make any.

That is why I am not doing it for the money.
...so I can make money!

Honestly though, if I had the chance to play infront of a crowd who loved my music and shared the energy I was trying to feel then I would do it for free.
If I have to play hip-hop and cheese that I dont personally enjoy then I want yo money biatch.

DJing at a club, and DJing at a private party where you have to bring your own sound system is completely different.

I'm sorry but EDM gigs are pretty hard to come by. But when they do, they pay really well. At least here in LA it is, because we're in DJ Capital of the World! hahaha everyone's a DJ. If youre starting off, expect to either do it for free, or get paid very little. That's the price to pay for new DJs. I've been there.

On the other hand, I have no problem getting mainstream gigs. Shit, those are pretty easy and quite fun too. Those usually pay me $150-$250.

Mobile gigs are alot more money. You can make about $150 for a small house party to $1000 for a wedding.

Yeap! If you wanna make money, get into the Wedding DJing business.

I get paid in booze and drugs. That's where the money would end up going anyway.

and that's it right there

think of the time and expense that goes into even just one gig

the price you payed for each track you played that night, music isn't free

transit, your car, gas, getting a friend to drive, their gas, hell even bus tickets if you're taking that route, it's costing you to just get down to the venue

then there's just the cost of your personal time, time that you could be using to further your career, spend time with your girlfriend, etc.
even the time you've invested practicing, it's worth something

i'm all about young guys gaining experience but when i'm getting undercutted for shows because promoters would rather not pay a few inexperienced djs and give their crowd a half-assed show than book good talent and spend a few bucks on a quality show

your time is worth money, even inexperienced guys should be asking promoters about how they compensate their djs

and that's exactly how you word it, go up to them and ask "how do you compensate your djs?"

they should pay you or offer some free drinks unless it's obvious they aren't making any money that night, in which case you need to work on getting people to come and see/hear you spin

+1. Records don't grow up on trees, and I didn't get my gear for free.

I'm Djing a party for free on Saturday though. But it's a private halloween party for a friend, so it's different.
