Because the N word was used as a way to demean their entire race BY OUR RACE up until recently, whereas "cracker" has just been a poor attempt at a racial slur for white people, with no real conotation behind it.

Chris rock doesn't try to insult white people. If you think that's his aim then you haven't really understood his comedy. In his 'cracker' bit, Chris rock is pointing out that black people are just as racist as everyone else - they just do it behind your back so you don't hear it.

The joke Rock uses is the old man saying 'cracker ass cracker' everytime he see's a white man pass him, but as soon as he talks to him, the man smartens up with 'yes sirr boss, whatever you want'...only to go back to 'cracker ass cracker' as soon as the white mans left.

To label Rock a racist over 'cracker' which is nowhere near as loaded a term as nigga is preposterous!

The key point here is that he was not using the word as part of a joke.

If he had used the word in his routine, in a different context, he may well have gotten away with it. This is NOT the case.

Given, we don't see what happens for for his triade, but there really is nothing the guys could have said to set this off. Michael Richards is a professional comedian, part of the job is dealing with hecklers. I don't see any legitimate reason for calling someone who paid to get into your show a n*gger. Had he stopped at "with a fork up your ass" he would have been okay...on the line, but okay. My guess, too much coke before his set.

Professional comedians need to read thier audience's reactions to determine what material is working. When he belts out the word n*gger, you can hear people saying "oh my god" and "oooh", this is not topical shock - It's disbelief. The fact the guys didn't rush the stage and own this guy are testament to thier restraint. For that, I'll ignore the 'cracker' comments. If I said that to some guy at a club, I wouldn't have any right to expect any help in the alley when I'm getting my ass kicked.

There is no way to justify this. MR was out of line, period.
I don't care how much he denies being a racist, this was not material. He got pissed about being heckled and these racial epithets were his first response. Irresponsible and inappropriate.
Look at his body language while this is going down, he is dead serious. This guy is done in Hollywood.

Maybe Mel Gibson is looking for a golf partner...

most of you people are both right and wrong. yes black comics get away with alot more than white comics do in respect to the edgy/racial material. BUTT what Richards did was WRONG, it wasant part of an act or hi smaterial it was him having a breakdown lol. anybody who honestly is trying to defend him needs to get your head checked. He was attacking another member individualy/one on one. big diff

very true, it's the context for sure. Borat, for example uses the n-word in the movie and talks about the "man with the chocolate face" but it was hilarious and unoffending given the context of the plot. Richards is toast.

people may have misunderstood my point.

I was neither defending or critisising the comments richards made. I was merely trying to make people think things through before automatically hitting the racism button. Perhaps what he said was out of racism? Perhaps it wasnt. But that doesnt stop everyone from jumping to that conclusion right away does it?

And yes id like to see the rest of that tape. Im always suspicious whenever i only see the part of an interview, event or scenario that the editor wants me to see. I still wonder whether it was racism or just a poor attempt at being funny on richard's part.

As for "cracker" not being as offensive as "n*gger" i tend to disagree. It all depends on the context it is said and why it is said. If i hear it in a joke it doesnt bother me. But if someone called me that in rage id probably be very offended as would many people i know.

Words dont hurt people. Its the feelings behind them that do.
