I used to be a complete Europhile and made 3 trips over 2 summers. It's really easy to travel via the trains, and you can change your course at time. I've done short trips between Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Brussels. If you're visiting Amsterdam, Belgium is very accessible and definitely worth a stop if only for the beer and chocolates. You could even just go for a day trip since it's only an hour or two away.

If you're going to northern Italy, Switzerland and Austria are also easy to get to. I've been to Zurich, Vienna, and Salzburg. I think Austria is usually overlooked for more exciting countries in Europe, but Vienna is especially rich with culture. If you appreciate architecture, it's absolutely beautiful. If you like opera, this is definitely the place to see one. There's also a cool interactive music and sound museum http://www.hdm.at/

I second going to Santorini in the Greek Isles. If possible ride a donkey on the cliffs lol, and have seafood at a restaurant on the water. It's really quite a unique experience.

I've also been to Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, and Germany, but I feel like I've been rambling enough already

i go to france every year, and paris is always a good city to start in because u can grab a train to anywhere in europe from there, and plus its paris and there's a sh*tload of things to see and do

+1 but bordeaux mmh at least for wine castles people who do visit usually speak some english

but to be honest whole france is kinda reluctant to speak english or an another language than french

haha that's true. The stink is pretty brutal, not for the faint hearted, but it's better than climbing the cliffs yourself! It's pretty damn steep.

If you head south from Paris, definitely stop in Lyon, gastronomic capital of France and therfore the world Only caution is it's hard to get by without knowing French. I relied on a friend that was living there for the summer.

i was born in france and was there til i was 12 so speaking french will not be a problem, im from the south west anyway

Sorry, I quoted you regarding France, but I meant that language comment for Slylee since she's the one planning a trip.

Ive never had a problem in france. I just flap my arms in the air & make weird gestures & people seem to understand. Im good at Charades. All the main tourist places speak english & alot of resturaunts have english menus. Learning the basics, knowing the city map & underground subway network helps.

For some reason I <3'd Bordeaux.

Slylee, go where your heart takes you, but one and only one rule (besides being safe, of course): plan well, but at the same time be open to being spontaneous

These trips are some of the only times we get to do whatever we want and just totally fuck off, what a feeling, get to a train station and decide not to board your train for Vienna and go to Budapest instead; meet these people from some crazy place on their way home and go with them for a few days, you can country-hop like in New York or Miami we bar hop




Next places on my list (SUMMER 2007 w000t!!)
- "Tours" of Serbia, Bosnia, and Bulgaria by my friends in those countries, hopefully will have time for several non-commercial places in each of those countries
- Possible weekend excursion to Greece from Bulgaria with Bulgarian friend
- Also considering Bucharest & Budapest b/c of proximity

If I get the internship in Vienna or Geneva I applied for, a long weekender in Croatia is definitely in order.
