Prof Fernandez-Armesto, that spanish or portugese?
There's a linguistic clash in his name: "-ez" is a Spanish ending, but a pure Spanish name would've dropped the initial "F" (whereas Portuguese would've kept it).
My instinct says it's Spanish, as it doesn't look like modern Portuguese at all, and surnames tend to be more conservative.

The Fernandez is definitely spanish, it's quite common in some countries. The tricky part is the Armesto. I have never encountered a last name like this one. It's the 'Arm' combination at the beginning is not used frequently for last names in spanish.

I thought Armesto was a variation of Arnesto.

Leaves it as two possibilities I guess, the journalist couldnt spell them or he has a hyphenated last name due to a hot tempered spanish missus not wanting to give up hers, with a 'double barreled' surname they tend to keep the mans last in most cases.

I still have never encountered a surname like that, or any variation of one that resembles that one. Oh well, you never know maybe it was some really really small town in spain like my surname No one pronounces it right, and what i mean by that is that when they read it they say another surname that is sort of like it but more common. It's a bit annoying :P
