I'm off to Cancun in 12 days. I won't say that the recent events haven't made me potentially more cautious than I would have been without any of this going on. Having said that, I still feel it is a safe place to travel to. My mind is telling me that this is the media flavour of the month(s). As soon as there is a good breaking news story, we'll never hear another thing about Mexico again.

Last December, went to the Riu Cancun (I think the one you linked was the Riu Palace). It's definitely a little bit nicer, but I really didn't notice much of a difference. They are next door to each other basically.
