UMass Amherst-- it's not in a city, but still in a pretty legit location and it fufills all the other requirements.

i have a plan, if i go to a community college there, claim residency, get honors (3.0 gpa) then i can transfer to a state school and get in-state tuition, and probably a scholarship. california seems perfect, it's warm, it has liberal openminded people, and i can go to a school thats in a city. does this sound realistic?

there are some great schools in the UC system. some are pretty hard to get into, others less hard. also, some are more liberal than others, but all will be liberal enough for what you are looking for. you can also look into the state schools (i don't know how this differs from the UC system). i only know the bay area schools like sac state, san jose state, and sf state. i don't know how long it takes to establish residency. you should come out and check it out.

SF state is pretty damn liberal fairly inexpensive and not too hard to get into. I'd also consider Berkeley which is more expensive more liberal and a much better school.

Depends on what you are into...

Seattle is only an hour from Olympia, Portland Oregon is a couple hours to the south. Both cities have pretty diverse and interesting music scenes, not comparable to LA in terms of electronic acts (its not to say it doesnt get its fair share though), but the Northwest is home to lots of major bands and is always a stop on most anyones tour.

If you are into outdoor recreation Evergreen sits on the south end of Puget Sound, there is a plethora of water activities to do. Kyaking, Boating, Fishing, etc are all easily within reach. To the east you have the Cascades and pretty much any mountain sport you could imagine.

To the west you have the Olympic mountains, which includes the only rain forest in North America. Farther out you have the Washington coast which is incredibly beautiful.

If you are looking for easy city access its not super perfect, but its a decent school (for some reason people in the state think its a joke, but out of state its considered a fairly decent liberal arts college) and its cheap and easy to get into.

Washington is a beautiful state, the people here are all really friendly too.
