I've also noticed with friends and everyone in my uni class - even lecturers; people who don't pirate are the minority in the 18-30 age bracket.
No-one really gives a shit, it's just part of everyday life. Piracy will always exist, all companies can try to do is slow it down.
Most people who use pirated goods wouldn't have bought it anyway so the company isn't really at a loss. If you use a free compressor or torrent a commercial one, makes no difference to the economy if you have no money to spend.
Piracy makes the world of computers and technology more attractive to average joe, so you could argue it's good for the industry in the long run.
