Seems like a very good introduction.

The thing about classical music i'm uncomfortable with is that it's so hard to get ones head around all the different works by every composer, decide which recordings to buy, performed by what orchestra etc. I find it hard to apply my usual standard of pedantry, and i just can't get some cd, put it on and be happy.

I've been at this for about five years now and I struggle with that still. The biggest composers like Beethoven and Brahms will have dozens of recordings of each work. So when I don't know what to do I sometimes ask questions on classical music forums and go with the advice of whichever people seem most knowledgeable.



I know lots of classical listeners collect multiple recordings of the same work, but my collection isn't yet thorough enough to justify that sort of thing. I'm trying to get some breadth before I dig deeper.

I reckon that's a good way to go about it. I've been meaning to do some serious listening of Bartók and Satie for some time now, i'll have to figure out where to start.

The Bartok piece I posted above ("Music For Strings, Percussion, and Celesta") is my favorite. Epic. His piano concertos are brilliant as well, especially the First IMO. I don't have any Satie yet, and I've hardly heard any even. One of those gaps in my collection, along with Scarlatti, Tchaikovsky, Profokiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Scriabin, and many others...much buying to be done yet.
