I took a a 10 month course on Japanese in grade 11, didn't learn squat. I think I may be language retarded.

it's alright, frenchie... i took 5 years of spanish and i cannot speak a coherent sentence. thats a damn shame but this is because i didn't care/pay attention. i had no interest, we were just required to learn a language in high school.

i learned 1000^ more in 3 semesters of japanese than in 5 years of spanish.

Yup.

My teacher authored all these books. We used the Contemporary Japanese ones.

That's great!!!

I wish someone here did something similar — the material we've got in Brazil is horrible (with one notable exception, which we can't use at university anyway)... most of the stuff I know I learnt from books I had to import

I already bought my advance ticket .. Ive seen PvD a couple times at Ageha and its never been sold out.

As for studying how to speak Japanese (when your alone with no Japanese speakers to practice with) a method Ive used is when I study with textbooks is to ask and answer questions yourself out loud. Do this in a past and present form as well as try to ask an original follow up question to your answer.
