I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Discovery Channel's documentary on Daniel called Brainman, the same guy this book is written about. It is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. They take him through a battery of tests by some of the most skeptical scientsts and time and time again he blows their minds with his abilities. Near the end, he learns fluent Icelandic, the hardest language to learn, in a single week. I have the documentary I could rip it and upload it somewhere if anyone is interested. You have to see it.

I think many autistic children see socializing as boring, well, when they can do so much in their own head, what use is humanity? It's a waste of time to them.

Not really. Current theories on autism explain they're lack of socializing as a neurological deficiency in abilities related to socializing, i.e. theory of mind, amongst other things.

Me personally, I have seen both worlds. Humanity has it's function of extrodinary emotional highs that are unlike any drug, and autistics demonstrate an the extrordinary use of the mind to organize and store information. The trick is to find balance, and emotions are more difficult to control.

The wierd thing is, even though I was diagnosed as autistic, there are ways to channel the emotions of others and absorb them. So I believe autistic people can socially intergrate by spending time channeling other people. NLP rapport techniques have evolved recently, and they've made some startling discoveries about just how potent Rapport really is and it's effects on the brain. I do rapport all the time now, I find it quite, stimulating. Even TV shows work with rapport. Which is why I am so capable of forming a rational point. (Too much House MD) But House is my hero, and the show is the most intelligent show ever written.

Refer to my post above. Most autistic children are NOT savants. A good percent of autistic children are mentally retarded, depending on how 'autism' is defined in the spectrum up to 40% of autistic children are mentally retarded. Around 10% are savants. So the norm for autistic children is to have mental deficiencies not superb abilities.

I watched it on channel 5 (UK) as part of the Extraordinary People series - "The Boy with the incredible Brain".

The full 48 min programme is on Google Video: [[ LINK REMOVED ]]

Interesting stuff.
