It slams atoms at extremely high speeds. When an atom gets smashed, it breaks apart, releasing its so-called (guts). By looking at what is inside of an atom, we can test theories such as string theory, which is based on sub-atomic particles inside the atom.

The reason it is so big is that is take a lot of energy to slam these atoms together at the high speeds needed.

it will simulate the conditions of the universe immediately after the big bang. the main purpose of this accelerator is to experimentally prove the existance of a particle called Higgs Boson. I think roughly the existence of this particle will provide a link between gravity and other three fundamental interactions (electromagnetism, weak and strong nuclear force) which have been shown to be related.

At a cost of more than $ 2200 million, the accelerator is more than 16 miles in circumference. Surely, it will make for a cool night club

it will also be able to establish the existence of parallel (?) universe(s), by looking at particles that jump from ours to another (i think).

there's a bunch of theories it aims to investigate (Wiki)

* Is the popular Higgs mechanism for generating elementary particle masses in the Standard Model violated? If not, how many Higgs bosons are there, and what are their masses?[2]
* Will the more precise measurements of the masses of baryons continue to be mutually consistent within the Standard Model?
* Do particles have supersymmetric ("SUSY") partners?
* Why are there apparent violations of the symmetry between matter and antimatter?
* Are there extra dimensions, as predicted by various models inspired by string theory, and can we "see" them?
* What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy?
* Why is gravity so many orders of magnitude weaker than the other three fundamental forces?

Fixed!

Is it a theory or is it a fact ? Gotta check the bible first. brb

i have heard of that when it came to the nearing completion of CERN's Large Hadron Collider. That it might open a hole in the fabric through which things can pass two way (much like Asimov's move with the masturbating gaseousaliens and Tungsten-54(The Gods Themselves?)), or, just simply creating a massive black hole where earth is imploded into the collider and we all die/surf through the universe/time travel

awesome. what a fucking great experiement. fuck theoretical physics gets me hard.

it is really abstract, I can say that. you gotta have a lot of intuition and intelligence to "understand" extremely complex math and use it as a powerful tool. You only need to step into this forum to realize the complexity. I am really interested in physics, especially relativity and astrophysics. It's all fine and easy if you go about reading pop sci books. But once you open a technical book, it immediately becomes abstract. And that is where the true understanding lies. I am working on my PhD right now, and I fully intend to develop my math skills so that I can understand atleast some of this physics. I work with a lot of math. But it's engineering math and it does not even begin to touch this level. At least not now. Dunno what will happen as I go deeper into my program.

i can't believe i wasted all this time reading about string theory.
nobody told me to skip the bullshit and head straight to m-theory
