I'd like to bet that within 12 months everyone will have moved onto something different

lol totally, edm fads are a funny thing actually I think. Its important to like what you like and the huge emphasis on styles and sub genres is stupid. Labling purposes and thats where it dyes to me. I'd love to think that within those 12 months people would start listening to euro and hardstyle again and leave our advanced electronic music alone

Like most beginners, I started with dance/eurohouse, you know, that crap from MTV/Viva such as Scooter, Aquagen and such. Then I moved on to the cheesier side of trance, stuff like Cosmic Gate, Warp Brothers and Future Breeze (thinking it was techno).

Somewhere in the beginning of 2004 I discovered TranceAddict and the non-cheesy side of trance. I downloaded all of sets and singles from TA and instantly fell in love with that kind of trance. However, I got bored of it pretty fast (after 2 years or so) because new trance (post-2004) didn't really float my boat and living in past listening to classics from 1998-2001 all the time seemed rather pointless.

This list is the summary of the most of EDM genres I've been through and experimented with since 2004, in no particular order, with example artists in parentheses:

- trance (Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, Chicane, Nu NRG, Mirco De Govia, Transa, The Thrillseekers, Vincent De Moor, In Trance We Trust series)
- goa/psy trance (Man With No Name, Astral Projection, Xenomorph)
- downtempo/ambient (Enigma, Nightmares On Wax, Röyksopp, Delerium, Conjure One)
- breakbeat (The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Orbital, although they've had other phases as well)
- IDM/abstract/experimental (Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, The Future Sound Of London, The Sabres Of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsmen)
- electro (The Hacker, Miss Kittin, Ellen Allien)
- minimal (Dominik Eulberg, Michael Mayer)
- rhythmic noise/industrial (Converter, Synapscape, Somatic Responses, Iszoloscope, Asche)
- EBM (Icon Of Coil, Combichrist, Panzer AG)
- techno (Umek, Adam Beyer, Vitalic, Oxia, Alexander Kowalski, Jeff Mills, Joey Beltram, Model 500, Valentino Kanzyani, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke)
- nu skool breaks (Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Meat Katie, Phil K, Rennie Pilgrem, Krafty Kuts, Hybrid, Evil Nine, Lee Coombs)
- progressive/tech house (James Zabiela, Luke Fair, John Digweed, Sasha, Booka Shade, Balance series, Renaissance series).
- drum'n'bass (Ed Rush & Optical, Black Sun Empire, Noisia, Phace, Concord Dawn, Teebee, Bad Company UK, Klute, Cause 4 Concern)
- trip hop (Massive Attack, Lamb)
- leftfield (Leftfield)

Right now my favorites by far are drum'n'bass subgenres techstep and neurofunk followed by techno, nu skool breaks and progressive/tech house.

awesome replies...interesting to see the different paths people have been through eDM. The long detailed descriptive ones of progression and and...

castles in the sky -> hawtin

sick lol.

Who would have thought people listening to Alice Deejay, Amber, Ian Van Dahl back in the day to eventually end up listening to Sven Vath and Hawtin hahaha! So i guess we shouldnt really bash the people who are listening to CHEESEY shit today because maybe in 5 years they'll be producing the next Dark and Deep Underground Track.

Trance/House > Hard Trance > Psy > Hardcore > Hardstyle/Freeform

In terms of the order in which I began listening to those genres, very roughly.

No that's precisely why we need to give them a swift kick in the butt

1988-92 I listened to pop/MTV type of stuff, Michael Jackson,
Rolling Stones, Pet Shop Boys, London Beat and everything else in that range...
1992+ came first EDM I liked U96, KLF..
1994 I got heavilly into italo/dance, eurodance which was dominant
where I used to live, there was a radio show "Dee Jay Time" that's
still running today with live DJ mix and they also organised many parties..
this pretty much went on until I heard PvD in 98 sometime.
1999 when I got internet I came across Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto mixes,
this "trance" music was new to me and I had a 6th sense telling me
go with it and I liked it a lot...I didn't have an opportunity to go
to any events because there weren't any quality ones around but
thanks to internet I saw what people in Holland/UK had available...
and I dreamt to go there one day...until
2002 I ended up listening all sorts of trance/techno/house without
any real preference, I was up for anything...then in the summer of
2003 I went to Holland for the first time and it was a life changing
moment, I went to few quality parties and one festival and simply
fell in love with the culture and also got a favorite DJ, Armin van Buuren,
I knew of him prior to this but not much, the energy, the vibe
and the music he played fell right along the lines to all that I
was missing up to that point and I craved for more, after I went back
home I got into ASOT and travelling as much as situations permit me
around europe to various parties/festivals to this day.
I don't care what people say about ASOT type of trance AvB, A&B, G&D etc...
it's something I like listening to and going to places where I
can listen to such music, however I am against DJ Mag list and
overexposure of this genre but it's out of my hands.

seriously...i started listening to the crap like castles in the sky (which was new to me atm) and just progressed from there. i think you just have to be someone who is willing to listen to all different types of music - i continually want to listen to new music and hear something interesting and eventually i get bored with what i'm hearing - i have to admit that most of the minimal dj's at demf bored the crap out of me - i even gave ghetto tech a try at demf which wasn't too bad

If there's any place to try it, it's Detroit - and honestly, even though I've heard absolutely atrocious Ghetto Tech sets before, when it's done right it can be a lot of fun.
