Really? ANYTHING post-96? Tell me what was so great about the early 90's horror period, let a lone most of the franchising drivel that went on in the 80's? The horror genre is one that has always been flooded with garbage and few gems, post-96 is no different.

YES! +1k
The single most, hands down, best horror/dramatic film of all time. Nothing compares to this movie at ALL - Aside from the Blair Witch Project, this was one of the most raw movies i've ever seen in my life....you actually FELT like you were in that room w/ the devil. (book was amazing too).

i like from the ring where the girl came out from inside the tv.
badass shit. |
also, a very awesome scene. That whole movie was cool. At the begining at first i was very doubtful, cause it looked VERY cheesey (opening scene). but then as the movie portrayed on, i was so involved with it....and i caught that one short clip where you see the girls hand come out of the well....so at the end when all seemed happy and fine, i was thinking "wait a minute, she's still coming out of the well!" and then the little boy was like, "you helped her? WHY'D YOU HELP HER?!" and then i was like, "OH FUCK YEAH THIS IS GREAT!" and the TV scene happened and holy shit it was great. lol

Scanners and The Shining scared me really badly, about the only other more 'modern-ish' one to have me crying under a blanket was (I guess not technically a horror) 28 Days Later, it really didn't do much for my nerves. Neither did Alien come to think of it, that was some scary stuff... |
Stanley Kubrick did a pretty good job putting his own twist on that movie.
so yeah, my top three:
Exorcist (only the original....2nd one sucked so bad, 3rd one was ... meh... and the 4th one went straight to DVD so you know it sucked ass).
Blair Witch (again, just a real raw movie with no special affects at all....made you feel like you were in the woods).
The Ring (the second one was OK, but the first was the best). I mainly liked the ring a lot because I had caught that one scene right off the bat, and so i was wondering the whole time , "is she dead? or no!?" and that scene w/ the TV....man....that should go down in history.

well for me.. earlier horror flicks concentrated on scares through visual means i.e gore and stuff... where as i find most recent horror movies its just the same old thing... someone walking around on their own,, everything goes quiet and dark then blahh! cue loud sound effect and flashing light, and there you go, theres your scare. personally im not a jumpy person at all so this dosnt scare me one little bit.
prime example of the perfect horror film for me... as has been said a few times in this thread.. EVIL DEAD.. the first one, the other are great, but this is just a great horror flick, the 2nd great also, but a bit more comedy orientated

I haven't seen the movie in a while, but is the creature just supposed to be a physical (albiet absurd) explanation for the strange occurrences in the town, that the population NEEDED something to blame, so they fabricated "yes yes, it is the MOTHMAN who does all this weird shit." I took it that no one actually ever saw mothman, or red eyes glowing or anything, but that (in a means to return to sanity) placed their reasoning of crazy thinking on the mothman.
I thought The Descent was superb. The LionsGate cut (American Release) really ruined the ending, but in it's original form, was more than the clear cut simplistic horror films saturating the market today.
If you enjoyed The Descent, Haute Tension is sure to please as well.
I felt Silent Hill was very strong until the point of "revelations" (which goes against the grain which says Sean Bean's character really ate piss), at which point it became:
1. very boring.
2. excessively gorey
The previously mentioned Audition (from Takahashi Miike) is one to be seen if you are into an insanely huge plot twist (the movie starts out reminiscent of a romance, then goes somewhere else very quickly). I take it any woman with a strong enough stomach will thoroughly enjoy it.
some others:
Jacob's Ladder
Session 9
The Ring + Ringu (I enjoyed each very much)
