Exactly. The scene seems to be healthier than ever at the moment imo. Every single aspect of it seems to be thriving. While Famous is full every week, there are also plenty of smaller, niche/more underground (for want of a better phrase) nights around Melbourne that are getting good numbers. Techno is covered, breaks is covered, house is covered and even trance is pretty much covered (thanks to ben lol). Honestly Vman, if it pisses you off that these kids don't know what 'electro' really is, then you need to start worrying about something important I can almost guarantee that half of them won't be the slightest bit interested in music in another 3-5 years (just like 1/2 the people who were going out to parties 5 years ago...), so it's not going to matter anyway. I think you would find that the majority of punters at regular club nights don't have a wealth of musical knowledge, they're just there to have a good time with their friends. And i don't just mean Famous either, i reckon if i chose someone at Ffour randomly tonight and asked them if they could tell me the difference between minimal techno and house music i'd have well less than a 50/50 chance of that person being able to tell me. I started chatting to some guy whilst in the toilets at Ffour a few months back who, after i told him i was about to start playing, asked me if i could play some of that deep and dirty techno that John Course plays... I just had a bit of a laugh to myself and told him i most certainly would. He rocked out on the dancefloor until almost close and he was having a great time - which ultimately is the idea of going out no?

I was at Paolo Mojo last week and I know quite a number of people who left early because of the crowd, but i was enjoying his set so much (maybe it was more the surprise of how good it was because i wasn't expecting much) that the people around me barely registered. I was almost driven batty at one point by a girl who kept bumping into me whilst she tried to dance, but i just moved away a bit and the problem was solved. After Good Vibrations last year, I probably won't ever go to the bowl again however, because it's such an uncomfortable place to be when there are big crowds in my opinion. But then there were a lot of people saying how fantastic they thought FMF was when i can only imagine that it would have been exactly the same - everyone is different, but that doesn't make anyone more right than anyone else.

The only thing that worries me about this 'culture' that you speak of is that i've noticed n00bs don't look out for each other as much as "we" used to. During a gig somewhere recently i was confronted by a group of three mates on the dancefloor, one of which was clearly very very very inebriated. He was stumbling all over the place and at one point almost fell and knocked his head against the wall. All his mates could do was stand there and laugh, almost egging him on... It made me think that if i had a friend who was in that state, i would be more worried about getting them some fresh air or out of harms/people's way than anything else - but it almost seemed like they thought it was 'cool' or whatever for him to be like that. I think that is the type of ignorance that is truly a negative for 'the scene'...

Anyway, i'm off to go see Anthony Pappa play at the Day Rave. It will be the third time he's been back to Melbourne in almost a year, so things seem pretty healthy from my perspective. I'm also playing after a guy called Phil K who is without a doubt one of the most talented DJ's on the planet. He travels quite a lot these days but always comes back to Melbourne Sorry, but i don't subscribe to the notion that we're somehow behind the rest of the world musically - in fact if it wasn't for Melbourne, progressive house would have sounded a hell of a lot different We're just a little further away which makes it harder to tour people, but we never miss out. I guarantee you would still find pockets of the same ignorant people no matter what country you're in - thats life really

Probably the biggest issue with clubbing and the music fests, Australians really are a seedy lot at these things. Its a massive drug culture right now and i agree, people aren't looking out for each other as much as they should

one of the best things about electronic music is introducing people to it and the reaction they have when they realise trance or progressive is not the same as the stuff they hear on the radio, or the hard kandy raver style.

part of the problem with the scene in melbourne is the elitist culture that tends to exclude those who are just starting out.
