well, over here, unless its a private school, then it's not an education. the public education system is practically non-existent. what few public schools are functioning have 60-80 kids in classrooms not big enough for half, where 5 kids have to share one notebook, and lean on a concrete block if they want something to balance when they write in it.

i am not kidding.

i will admit the education from some private schools is pretty damn good, but still, you don't have AP classes or introductory college courses. hell, some kids never even learn any organic chem. while in HS, in some fucking expensive high schools.

universities? well, given the piece of shit teachers i am delighted to have at one of this country's top 3 universities (if not #1 itself) well... what can i say, i am not very pleased. the leader of the department of physics basically stated that acceleration, velocity and time have very little relation in my Physics 101 class. it was very fun getting shit wrong on the test when it was right, my physics teacher from high school couldn't help but laugh when i showed him.

edit: ooh. my philosophy teacher happened to be a priest, and hassled me a few times about being a jew. it was funny though, cause i would run circles around him and his bible thumping in class, and the rest of the students would end up questioning him and his holy ways, so i didn't have to. my dad got kicked out of this same university because of a priest that was a philosophy teacher as well. the priest tried to slap him tho, and my dad gave him a nice right cross. dad went on to study at the Bosch technical school in germany anyway.

ahh, the joy of education.
ya private schools is where its at in latin america, but there is such a wide range in prices, that its affordable for alot of poeple (of course poverty is so extreme in our countires that of course when i say affordable, i am using the term very loosely)

and lol at your philosophy professor and his crusades.

we have math, language (verbal + literature), geography, sciences (chem, physics, biology) and history. its not REALLY an SAT, i'm just kind of comparing that. unis don't even see your score for it. all you have to do is pass. you take these once in the 8th grade, and once after you graduate HS. no chem or physics in the 8th grade though.

its a fucking joke tho. no one ever fails, unless they almost got everything wrong. schools look really bad if they have a high fail rate, so schools pay off the state most of the time. even still, the test just covers an uber-broad range of things, very generally. as long as you attended a few weeks of class in the year, you should get by on your own steam perfectly.

sounds like a combo of tests we have...

they started this horrible thing called the MCAS and all Massachusetts students need to pass it to graduate. You take it at different grades throughout... I think there are 3 or 4 times. 4th, 8th, 10th.

We have SAT II tests that are for specific subjects. Some of the top schools require at least one in addition to the regular SATs of verbal + math.

We also have the AP exams which if you get a high enough score you can skip a year in college...

Either way it sucks, i hate standardized testing.

You don't really skip a year. You just get the credits from the tests you passed. I think you'd have to pass 10 of the AP exams to equal a whole year of college. Roughly 30 hours worth. I think they only offered 4 or 5 at my high school. Can't really remember because they kicked me out before I could take the exams and then the next year I wrote a letter to the college board telling them their AP shit is a rip off.

I love standardized tests. Here in Texas you need to pass a test called the TAKS or some bullshit like that you need to pass to graduate, but I never took it because I went to private school. I've heard it is extremely easy.

just to clarify

If you have a high enough score on any of the AP Exams (depending on university), you are either waived from taking that class or you get a credit that counts toward your degree

Fuck my $8000 tuition bill for one freaking year in school. I've read that in some countries, you can go to university for free. I just hope students have to pass an entrance exam, or each class would be filled with idiots.

disclaimer: didnt read thread

they accept freshmen because they get paid by the state to which is why the over enroll. A counselor for a nice uni told me very politely that if I went to harvard and got a 4.0 for 2 years they wouldnt accept me into school because they wont get paid for it.

A few years later, I readmitted myself into school at a different school to continue my education and finished a degree.

Now, I was trying to get back into the original uni to further my education/get another degree, and I was DENIED readmittance! Even though I FINISHED a degree somewhere else, and managed to keep a VERY high GPA at the new school, the old one doesn't give a flying f*#$ to say the least.

F@#^ this crap! Why is it so damn hard to get an education in this f*&#ing country?!?!?!

If I worked my ass off to raise my gpa and finish a degree, proving that I've gotten my life back on track, why the hell can't I make my life even better by getting a higher degree?!

That really sucks, sorry for you.

So over there if you fail one year you get penalized afterwards? Damn. Over here the only thing that can happen is to lose your scholarship if you have one, otherwise people can fail the classes for as many years as they want, and still it won't affect them in the future as long as they get good grades when they finally pass the classes. Hell, I've met people in my uni who are taking a degree since 1992! The only requirement for taking a masters after having a regular degree, is to have a good average grade.

Of course even if you have a perfect average it always sounds better in a job interview to say you took 5 years to take your degree instead of 15 years..

Shit the least they can do is pay for your Masters. I would never take anything from the military. Recruiters always call me to talk, but I hang up on them.

reapply or look into other schools

just because you got rejected from where you started college doesn't mean it's the end of the world

maybe, the school knew that you are more than qualified to come back in and finish your bachelor's degree but just didn't have the room to put you in. more and more students are attending college each year, so they don't have the resources to take on one extra student that will not be coming in.

either that, or you faced stiff competition for other candidates who applied for readmittance and/or transfer students.

just my theory
