good example. I do valet at a catering hall. Typical party is 5 hrs and all I get for standing and doing nothing is 20$. Thats 4$/hrs but then as I park the cars the tips are what raise that 4$/hr to maybe 10/hr or even up to 20/hr at the end of the party. Excpet they will be other valets along with me so they will get their share because we would split b/w amount of valets so if people start giving nothing we are all f'd

simple

good job = tip
bad job = discretionable because I once went to a denny's and was about to walk out I waited about 1 hr for breakfast after taking our order. Finally got the food and left 1$ BEAUSE the service sucked ass.

and the fact that you are fucked is a flaw in the tipping system, or the client's problem?

the fact of the matter is, the tipping system overpays workers in some respects, for work that is nowhere near worth that much, and in the cases of slow nights or unpopular businesses, fucks them over. well, not everything is pink and peachy, and if it benefits on one side, you can sure as hell expect it to fuck you over on the other.

i guess, if you don't like it, you shouldn't be in a job that's based on tips.
