Plus, for all of those people saying that we have it good and should be grateful yada yada yada....

What is wrong with taking what is already good and wanting to make it better? Wanting more? Wanting to see our city become a prominent place amoungst the global scene? YES, we do have it pretty good....but why settle?

...because you're not the one actually making it any better. you're just a whiney club goer who's never satisfied.

Just give me some techno (preferably minimal), some deep house, and funky prog, and I'll be a happy clown. There has been a lack of this for a long time now. Oh and of course...some talent being brought in that we don't usually get. I think these Exposed nights will satisfy some of my needs

Of course - why else would I have mentioned him?

Anyway, I will concede the point about venues. Going to the same club every week or even every month gets really old, which is one of the main reasons I hardly ever go. Having said that, I'm not sure which cities don't have that problem; where can you find an active electronic music scene spread out across more than about 5 clubs?

These events at the mod club give us another venue, and that's cool, but in the end it's... well, just another venue. It doesn't appear to me that we're getting any closer to having raves at the CNE or in the Skydome.

Is Crosstown still happening? Was that not a deep house option?

Exactly.

The problem isn't that there's too much house, the problem is that there's too much of the same house going around, and not enough support for other genres; whether it's deep funky house, minimal, tech house...whatever.

Other than London and Ibiza (for 5 months of the year) you would be VERY hard pressed to please everyone genre wise. I could even argue with you that Ibiza's "scene" is makeshift, and that London's scene is so scattered and large it lacks any cohesive music scene commonality. The "oh we need more of this genre" argument to me is a bit unfair when one would form an overall opinion of what Toronto has given us over the years.

Absolutely nothing. My original interjection was in retaliation to comments about our scene having "nothing exciting" and generally being shit. It's funny, I have such a respect for this scene that I take comments like that personally. (hah maybe I'm a "scenester" as mentioned)

To put some more perspective into this thread I wish we could get some comments from people living in L.A, Miami, Tokyo, Dubai... or how about Paris... or Dublin??! Seriously guys, you'd be shocked at how diverse our scene is at the moment.

I've really enjoyed this thread, the discussions have really shaken up my thoughts on what people are thinking these days.

A couple of points:

- First, I think it's hard to qualify "how good we have it" in Toronto without comparing it to the scenes in other cities. In order to fairly compare it to the scene in other cities, you would have to live there for a number of years, and then have lived in Toronto for a number of years. I find that people are too quick to hype up another city's scene, just because they went on vacation there and had a good time.

- Second, way too many people on this site complain about lack of variety in Toronto, when a lot of times those people usually only go to a very small selection of venues (ie: Guv, This is London). This is usually due to the fact that their friends only go there. If you go to the same clubs all the time, of course you're going to be faced with lack of variety. If you want to see different names, then stop going to the Guv. There is a TON of variety in this city, with smaller events, and a very good variety of genres and DJs.

As a side point to this, I love when people expect The Guv to book different DJs at Labour of Love every year, when Labour of Love is the biggest dance music event in Toronto of the year, meaning that there is a pool of probably less than 10 DJs that is going to make it the biggest event.

- Third, I agree that it looks like the scene in Toronto is about to get more interesting. Right in time for me to leave, lol.
