well there was no 'official introduction' of stamps as we know them today.

Here is a fact, i don't know if its completely true thou:
The Spainish used to use a torture method (or execution method, really) involving puting the victim inside a wooden keg with a hole in the lid for their head, and filling the barrel full of bugs, insects etc (basically decomposers) and just leaving you there for months. When they come back the victims head just lifts off the lid, attached to nothing...
