But I think Vietnam is a particularly compelling case. The Viet Cong's technology was significantly below the Chinese military, and they had significantly fewer men at their disposal, and they still managed to wage a campaign that brought down 67,000 American soldiers. Waging war against China would be suicide, despite whatever technological advantage we currently enjoy.

You've also ignored the Chinese anti ship missiles which have been sold to Iran. Additionally the Chinese are running a navy with some 65-70 submarines that would go U-boat on the oil imports the US desperately needs.

Most of those battles were in the past and the more recent wars are guerilla wars. Focusing more on the most recent problem; Iraq. Let's not forget American forces for the most part are nothing more than police and are only actively driving out insurgent forces one sector at a time, effectively. When the entire American military goes medieval it can't be matched and although their anti-ship missiles are pretty good they arnt enough to stop the vast American Navy, which also has the capacity to defend whatever cargo ships it needs(55 American attack subs and plenty of ships.)

China would put up a fight, but inevitably lose the military engagement by a massive margin. Controlling the country is another issue, obviously.
