The overall theme of a track does not necessarily have to be made up out of melodic hooks.

There's something to be said for making compelling music, though. Do you admit to liking boring music, then?

"Boring" is highly subjective, and so is "compelling".

how is BT not catchy? unless we are talking strictly non-vocal, i don't even think there is an argument.

Let's have a "hypothetical" situation where the two are antonyms. I'll even let you say what music is compelling and what is boring, to fit with your condition of subjectiveness. Do you listen to compelling or boring music, in your opinion?

If you find it compelling, then your music would definitely contain a hook of some kind. Whatever you find compelling about the track: that's probably the hook! Or one of them, as the case may be.

If you find it boring, then why are you listening to it anyway?

Now, in keeping with your whole idea of subjectiveness, I find BT's dance music boring, by and large. A large majority of it lacks something I find to be a compelling hook, by what I've laid out here as a hook. I don't see how you can take issue with such a critique on anything more than the basis of opinion, and if you care all that much about subjectiveness, then I don't think you really have no basis whatsoever to try to discount what I've said here.

Ishkur's got a point. I already hate plastic-y perfection to begin with (see: trance anno 2007), but on top of that BT tries to pass it off as art without having anything real going on in the first place. I actually can't remember what most of his tracks sound like, except Flaming June.

What pops into my mind is that time Madonna was talking about Aphex Twin and "Electronica", and you could tell she was just saying it to add credibility. That's what BT does. All this "experimentation" and "abstract concepts" to prove a point that isn't there.

P.S. What the fuck is with that Ableton video? What a ****.

EDIT: For more pretentiousness, find the video of Blu Mar Ten demonstrating a track off their new album in Reason 3. Give it a rest guys, you don't need any more fucking layers! And enough with the bloody world music samples.

I'm gonna have to go with the minority on this one.. I understand people having issues with Ishkur, i have my own too. But when people read his guide they're always only focusing on the negative, and miss the good points he's making, we (or atleast myself) have to give it to him though, he works hard as hell, and imo he's more oppinionated than a straight up prick.. To the best of my knowledge he doesn't start war's, The people who can't try to see the positive aspects of his posts start them..

I think i should shut up now

What you're saying is that if a chef serves up a pile of steaming cow dung, as a customer you're not allowed to complain. Why don't you sod off?

I'm almost certain that's considered a delicacy somewhere.

Ishkur didnt say he was a bad producer, he said that BT focuses on the technology involved rather than the actual song.
