Fine, the E70 may have most of the 'inventions' in the iPhone, but saying that good design (especially of a product that you will use everyday) is irrelevant is completely absurd. The fact of the matter is, Nokia have done it first, but Apple did it better. Start with the actualy physical appearance the phones, and we can both agree that E70 looks terrible, and the iPhone doesn't, right down to the actual GUI.
|
It's not irrelevant to the consumer, but it is irrelevant when we're talking about best INVENTIONS. There are awards given out to products for best design; I'd have absolutely no qualms about the iPhone winning that a best design competition.

"Improving on whats out there". So you agree then, that Apple has done it better? Design wise, marketing wise, and actually making people want it?
|
Design-wise, yes.
Marketing is mostly done by the hype Apple products receive in general. I'm in the opinion that Apple could start selling white bread, and people would still talk about it till your ears bleed.
Usability-wise, though, I'm not so sure. I like traditional phones a little bit more. For one, i can hit buttons without looking at the screen, and I don't have to wipe the screen of fingerprints everytime I use the phone.

Honestly, tell me that you would use that piece of shit (E70) over an iPhone. If they're both sub-par with the technology, which one would you choose? |
I'd choose the iPhone, but that's because I can resell it for more.
You're missing the point - I'm not saying the iPhone is shit. It's overpriced, but it is a very nice toy to have. That said, it doesn't deserve "invention of the year" by even a long stretch. Just because a lot of people are talking about it, doesn't mean there was a lot of inventing going on there.

I've had my Treo 650 for about two years now. It has a touch screen (yes, a perfectly good one), an SD slot currently holding a 2 GB card (which by the way, the iPhone doesn't support), an MP3 player, an NES/SNES emulator, a camera, and a dozen other useful 3rd party apps/games. The web browser looks exactly as you'd expect a web browser to on that size screen, and if I don't like it, I can always install Opera Mobile, which is at least as good as Safari.
Oh, and it's also unlocked GSM, supports GPS applications, and is built tough enough to withstand a bit of a drop.
So what exactly did Apple add? Oh yeah, the WICKED-ASS TOUCH SCREEN! Because it's not just any touch screen, it like, ACTUALLY SENSES TOUCH! And the web looks so much better with Apple's shitcake anti-aliased text! Oh, and, and, and... WIFI! Even though nobody actually uses it, and it drains the battery instantly, it's important for some reason! And just forget about the fact that every smart phone made since 2006 has had it!
Yeah... it looks nice. That hardly qualifies it for an "Invention of the Year" award.

You forgot that the screen adjusts itself depending on how you hold the phone. Craziness
