Precisely!

The relevance of whether or not humans have caused or accelerated global warming has been moot for some time - there is no way to reverse it or slow it down to a point where we will not feel the effects or have to devise ways to stay alive in our newfound Atlantis. I can't help but feel that global warming is just one of those stupid trends that people will pretend to care about intensely, but eventually find something else to crusade for when it's no longer chic. Everyone remember Y2K? *brief pause for laughter* I'm not saying it's not a legitimate concern - I am just saying that Global WarmingTM is the namesake which awards celebrity politicians for their awesome awareness-raising deeds and agenda-based profits! I mean, really, what does Al Gore have a Doctorate in?

Can people be arsed to compromise their current quality of life for something so nebulous as the weather getting warmer? I doubt it. I don't have that sort of faith in humanity.

And if awareness and action is to be arisen, it will be the corporations that bring it about. It's not even a matter of resources so much as it is the advertising monopoly and consumer hegemony they can exert. Think about our fuel situation - reliable, cheap, efficient transportation - it's all meticulously controlled by corporations. There is a reason why many companies are coordinating technological release so that they can be the ones who bring driving into a new age of humanity. So that they can be the saviours - the messiahs - the Fathers. And who will be the one to step up and save us from ourselves when the oceans close in on us - reclaim us as the aquatic feebleness we once were? It does not matter who, as it is an inevitability there will be someone there to collect when there is so much to gain; and fearful people pay the most - it is the desperate rich that fund Governments as it is. But could negative propaganda disguised as science be an investment of sorts? We'll see, I guess.

oh come on, you're better than that. that's what people who don't have the science behind them resort to.

what came first, the chicken or the egg?

did al gore "discover" climate change? of course not. sure, there might be people jumping on the bandwagon as you say, but how do you explain nearly universal consensus amongst climate scientists? do you really think the entire globe's minds are all getting together on the weekend to see where they can push their nefarious global climate change agenda?

what is the point of having "experts" in any field if we are going to so casually ignore what they have to say?

why does someone who is

...typing on a personal computer, that runs on electricity delivered from miles away, and is using this computer to chat to other people across the world in a global networking environment...

have such doubt about scientific opinion? an opinion that has been been shaped by the available evidence over the last 30 odd years? if this is really a "beat up" by climate scientists to pull the wool over our eyes, where's THAT evidence?

Heh, Al Gore invented Global Warming, didn't you hear? He just used to call it "Earthly Heating-Up" so he doesn't get as much credit for it as he deserves.

How do you know there is universal consensus on the matter? Have you met every climate scientist in the world or did you just read that somewhere?

Soldiers do not fight in wars to change the world, they merely do what they are told. What information is released from conflict is filtered and scanned by the people who want it to present in a way which preserves their interests or directs their hegemony in a favourable manner.

Science is just one, big circle-jerk. It seeks for the truth on its own terms. It credits itself with its own achievements, it pats itself on the back every time it finds something it didn't know before and seeks to streamline its own logic by assimilating or destroying alternate methods of thought. You think it is incomparable to religion? Not wholly.

Who are these experts and why do we have them? I didn't vote for any experts.

I am, of course, only part-way serious at this point, but I find your defense amusing as usual.

ahhhh, now we're getting into the wonderful world of conspiracies. unfortunately yours fails to expand beyond the usual rhetoric you hear from those that like to spit in the face of consensus.

now, considering that climate change is a big BIG problem for all of those that have power (governments and big business) why exactly are they "filtering" the scientific opinion towards a consensus that is the very antithesis of their needs and desires?

i would very much like a concrete argument (as opposed to the generic "evil powerful people controlling our information access") regarding exactly who it is you feel is hi-jacking the global warming debate/evidence, and how they are doing so.

can i have what you are smoking? scientists are the most capable of evolving their opinions or theories when presented with facts that undermine their thesis. but, since im interested:

what "alternative methods of thought" are being "destroyed" by the current global warming debate?

what evidence are they intentionally ignoring and who is making it?

indeed, asides from scientific inquiry, what other methods do you see available to us to understand or explain our climate?

amusing? in what way?

Excuse: "The people talking most about global warming have the most the gain from it. "

Anyone who says this has no scientific evidence to prove otherwise. So they fall below the logical fallacy I call slander. They have nothing good to say, so they talk shit about the speaker. Until the scientific consensus proves otherwise, all you climate change deniers are denying what's in right in front of your face.

Ice caps are melting. That's a fact. Greenhouse gases are at untold highs, this proven by ice core samples in the polar ice caps. Hell, even here in the southeast US, I've never seen a drought this bad, and meteorologists are saying its one of the worst in decades. Lake Okeechobee is at a record low. Georgia lakes are record lows. The state governments (Florida, Georgia, Alabama) are going nuts trying to figure out how share the water thats left. Europe has recently seen back-to-back record hot summers. The scary thing is these hotter summers are coming on year after year. These are not isolated events.
