I think going to the movies is more of a social experience because pop culture made it so, rather than any other logical explanation.
Still, I'd feel pretty damn awkward and weird going to see a movie alone. I simply won't do it. Those who go and don't feel awkward/weird, well, great for them, enjoy it.
For me, the fact that the nearest decent cinema is 30 minutes away on car, kinda made the whole thing unusual to me. For some reason movies don't appeal all that much to me neither, maybe it's that I'm saturated by all the Hollywood crap that comes up on TV, and the cinemas are all full of Hollywood crap. I probably went to the cinema only about 10 times in my life. Like about twice with my parents when i was a kid, once or twice in school visits, five or six times with friends... and that's it.
