but, see that "line" in the graph. irrefutable proof that higher firearm ownership leads to a higher rate of people using those guns to kill other people.

I don't think it's irrefutable.

We also have more marginalized members of society, take poorer care of the mentally ill, have a more violent culture over-all, and more acceptance of guns in general. There are a multitude of factors that explain why the USA has such high rates of gun violence, and while guns play a HUGE role (obviously) they are not solely to blame. Look at where Switzerland is on that graph...

how does one argue with that line of best fit?

yes, but taking into account what you've said ^^, switzerland is merely the US without those social factors (or at least less of them) ie still much higher than ANY comparable country.

his point is that the murder rate is MUCH lower yet they have more guns than we do per capita.

I just found out that one of my professors (and mentors in meteorology) was heading over to teach a class there at 330. The meteorology building is about 400 feet away from Cole (where the shooting happened).

A grad student in the met department was having a smoke when he said a ton of people just came running. That prof was walking over and came running back as well.

This is so fucked up. Close to home too.

It really pisses me off that the shooter committed suicide.

no, i said that the equation

higher gun ownership = higher use of guns to kill other people

was irrefutable. you said it wasnt, i would like to know how you argue with that line of best fit, which clearly shows a linear relationship between the two.

yes, switzerland is lower than the US, but it is still much much higher than comparable european countries that have lower gun ownership.

you can't disown a line of best fit because of one result that is a little outside the equation, indeed lines of best fit will often exclude one lower and one higher result to maintain the average. at least thats what maths told me back in 1996.

I was in Cole literally 15 minutes before this happened. I was in Reavis when news struck. Fucked up shit, man, I'm still not feeling right.

And yet Switzerland's total murder rate is lower than the murder rates of countries that ban guns, including that of Australia. This suggests that if our goal is to reduce the number of homicides, gun ownership isn't the first thing we should address.
