For the most part university is there to prepare you for the working world. Employers know that if you complete university then you can deal with the every day stress of the working world, you can complete tasks within given timelines and you have the motivation it takes to complete tasks.

I know very few people that are actually working in the field they studied in school. I have a B.Sc. in Geography and a minor in Anthropology yet I am working as an insurance adjuster. The only part of my education I use is reading maps to get to peoples houses and now with mapquest I don't even need to do that.

Tell it, Greenhorn.

I also used to believe that one of the main purposes of university (or at least the more practical programs) was to prepare people for the working world, as kind of a proof that you're capable of being taught. However, now having had some experience at the other side of that table, I no longer believe that even an engineering degree proves a damn thing, although I suppose it's still useful as a weed-out tool.

We've gone off-topic here, but anyway, right now my best philosophy towards a university degree is that it's a "50% off admission" coupon. That is, someone without a comp sci or eng degree is going to have to show twice as much worthwhile experience as someone who has one. But no matter what kind of a discount you're getting, you can still be fucking broke-ass, and a whole lot of people are.

Jenny, you know we engineers love nurses, but c'mon, like, seriously, it's not like you actually do any real work.
