Sidechaining isnt all about heavily pumping stuff.
Its been used for years on all sorts of musical styles. For a start you can use sidechains to de-ess vocals (google it) or to gate stuff effectively, and a whole load of other interesting stuff that can be devastatingly effective.
When all is said and done, it's just another tool at your disposal, and there is no 'right' way to use it.
As long as you use it in a way you see fit, and preferably creatively, then go nuts.
