lira is correct though, the labels mean nothing since the end of the first world. my point was that russia has never been referred to as 1st world because the who reason for deliniating 1st, 2nd, and 3rd world was to distinguish between the USSR and the US spheres of influence.

we don't separte the world into "first world" etc anymore it is on level of development...

Well I should point out that developed world and 1st world are used interchangeably in the US society. At least that is my experience. Maybe I am wrong, and please correct me if I am, but that is the way I seem to experience it.

3rd world and developing world are terms used interchangeably; however, the use of 1st and 2nd world have fallen out of favor. i haven't heard anyone say that in a long time.

These labels puzzle me. I live in a district (sort of a Brazilian District of Columbia) that is economically like Croatia, in a country whose HDI is considered "high". Yet, Brazil is considered a developing country, along with Afghanistan and Botswana

So, it makes me wonder... what are these labels good for anyway?

nada....but people know that despite the labels brazil and afghanistan are not the same, if not for the women alone.

doesn't brazil still have rampant poverty? while i've never experienced it, i've heard that the slums around rio are very 3rd world[ish]. literally neighborhoods with tin roof homes. correct me if i'm wrong.

i would think that in order to shed the label, the wealth distribution has to go down the ladder further so that there isn't a significant percent of the population living in squalor. i certainly wouldn't call china a developed country either, especially after 9000 people died in an earthquake today. many people in china live in very unsafe housing, despite their big skyrise buildings.
