As a general note, if you're using a home/office brand PC (especially HP) for Audio specific purposes you have to realise there is so much software pre loaded on that machine that has nothing to do with Audio. It's trying to be this home, multimedia, gaming, DTP, worprocessing, internet, educational, photoalbum, do-all-things-for-all-people computer.

HP also, love to promote their own brand within their own computer so a lot of it is also designed to keep flashing the HP product gourps to you.

All of this means when you go to use it for a specific use, it will not be anywhere as efficient as another computer that is configured or tailored for that use. To simplify, the more stuff it has running that has nothing to do with the task in hand, the slower it will go.

Even the version of windows that comes with it (yes the disk as well as the preinstalled version) will have a load of extra HP bullshit built in that you will probably never use or need.

People have got vista running fine now but it seems like extra hassle to get it set correctly not to mention that not all hardware manufacturers have vista supported yet. Anyway, I heard that Microsoft are bringing out a completely new OS (not vista based at all) in a couple years so what's the point in trying to learn it. Stick with XP - you know it works and everything has support.

As for the ASIO problem with FL - What soundcard do you have?

I think I'm correct in assuming that will be a built in soundcard, and if so the asio driver you have is probably the asio4all. It does improve latency but not a huge amount. The asio4all sits on top of your normal deivce driver, so if you deleted your normal conexant driver and are just trying to use the asio4all it won't work.

Get the correct driver here:

Conexant HD-Audio SmartAMC HD2

there is some info that a particular windown update screws the original driver up, so if this is what caused the problem or you encounter this problem next time you do a windows update, just use this driver.

once you've done that, then install the asio4all, but really you want to think about getting a decent soundcard.

Unfortunately, you do not have an asio option for your soundcard and honestly with the sort of projects you are trying to do, you need to think seriously about getting a soundcard or audio interface. Even a cheap one like the M-audio delta audiophile (2in 2 out for about $80) will see make a big difference in terms of quality.

It's so easy and takes about 45mins. Just remember to back everything up (on to an external drive/DVD's/other internal drive which is not going to be formatted/etc) and get all the new drivers for all your hardware before you do this.

i have a fasttrack i just bought but i'm not using it. will this work fine?

ok i'm gonna go out today and buy what i need for this. i don't have XP so i guess i need that, and also DVD's to back up my rns.files and reffils. Is there anything else i will need?

Also what do you meen get all new drivers for my hardware first?. i'm not too sure that i even know what a driver is i know this is getting rediculous and i really need to learn some stuff, sorry

thanks again !!

Post your reason file so we can all download and check how it runs on our pc's. That's the way forward.

I checked the RNS he posted, its the amount of devices. as you have also said. It should be still up if you need it.

Lowski - trust me dont reinstall with XP or mess with your sound card or ny settings, the problem definatley lays with your Reason set up. What I mean by this is what I mentioned before. The way you are using the devices. I know you say this is your default template but trust me this file stopped running on my PC and my PC is fine with any other reason files i play even the most CPU hungry tracks.

As DJ Rann said it will benefit you to learn to route and use devices in a different manner. As Reno also pointed out your using a single Redrum for a single hi hat or kick or snare etc. Your new PC may run this trak but as time goes on you'll run into the same problem in the future as you add more and more.

You should learn to use the spiders and learn routing individual sounds, synths, perc's etc. Also you mentioned you want to be able to Eq sounds later on in the redrum, you can do this, just use the channel outlputs for each sound on the redrum to its own mixer channel. You'll find not all percs will need this therefore those ones can all be in one redrum and eq'd together maybe? it all depends on what your doing

This also works for your samples. Use the NNXT in the same manner You also dont need maximiser on everything or any other processors, i.e. comp's, EQ.

Take a week before you take any destructive steps to learn about routing and minimizing your set up. At the end you'll hopefully learnt alot to take you up a level, which will stream line your work, and if you feel its still not working go for the reinstall. For someone that isnt sure about drivers, and computers technically I'd do this 1st before you start messing about. At least then you can say you tried, although I'm 100% certain you dont need to do any reinstall.

I used to do the same just use a new device for what ever you need, because you can, they are there to be used, as much as your PC can handle. Then I got annoyed with having to many devices to scroll through, too many cables, too many devices to see what went to what. Once I learned to route devices in different ways it made me work quicker and use less, which helped with the speed of my work flow and also my PC didnt have to work as hard. Also its less cluttered, everything is more organised.

Its all just a learning curve.

Phew!

Music2dance to is totally right about your session and it's config but you really should be using the M audio fastrack as your only soundcard - please trust me on this - I spent 2 years of my life doing tech support for DAW's and it will make a difference to your setup. The two sound devices you have listed, are not suitable for audio production.

To install your fast track, first go to the M-audio website and download the latest (not beta) driver for the fast track and your platform. Don't use the one on the disk, they are usually out of date. Then just follow the install instructions either from the m audio website or the book you got with it. Then make sure reason is correctly set up to use this device.

Eventually, I do recommend re-installing XP, but as it's a lot to take on for you, it can wait as you will probably benefit more right now from streamlining your project within reason. Long term though and as you get more familiar with with PC's, you should do this, as HP's benefit so much from it.

By the way a driver is a piece of software specifically written to allow a device(hardware) to communicate/function with a computer operating system.

If you're not confident about the whole reformat thing (and really if you don't know what a driver is, it's probably best not to attempt) leave it until you can.

Some good advice from DJ rann regarding the sound card. If you can do that you may as well.

Try a system restore that will reverse any changes you made to settings. Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools then open system restore. It will tell you what to do, its very easy and you can reverse the process if you wanted to after. At least this way you can go back to how you were and it only takes a 2 mins.

Down the line I to would suggest putting XP on your PC. Maybe get someone to do it for you and watch them if poss then you'll be able to do it in the future.

ok time to give you guys an up date especailly for any one having the same problem.

first off. dj rann has been amazing with helping me out on this one, tha's why i love this site. you can find solid advice from people who actuall seem to give a fuck (which is very rare in this world today)

anyway where i was last left off i tried doing what rann said , but the concicence was that i have no idea about how to use a computer except for reason and the internet. so i fucked up my desk top pretty bad. after that i just wanted it to get back to normal , even with the problems i had with the cpu/dpu i could at least play a song whci after trying the techniques with no experience or know how from what dj rann offer i was left stck with not even being able to run any song with out it going into the red zone (the worst thing and what i was ultimatly trying to avoid)
anyway after a pm of the proposle of him fixing my comp as he claimed in his posts that he could do, with a cash reward of course (and at this point i was willing to pay plenty considering i just bought a new desktop to curbe my problems but was told that my original was more then capable. regarless unfortunatly he was too busy to help, working in the entertainment industry in LA i can totally understand. so he was generus enough to still take the time to help) he gave me the advice and a link to a computer tech section on craigslist. yes i was abit iffy but rann seemed to know what he was talking about so i trusted him. i actually found a guy right away , his post was specializing in comp tech for music and audio programs, so i thought perfect !!!.
anyway i called and dropped off my comp , basically what he said and explained to me is that he would pretty much do what rann had already been saying.
after a couple days (becuase it was on the weekend). i got my computer back.
the set up look quite different which i was told/ warned about.
all in all i found my songs to be running a LITTLE more smoothly. i wasn't gettin into the red zone as much as i was before. and just for that i was thankfull. although the newer songs i have produced using reason 4 ( thor, really) still seemed to go into the red zone. mainly what i ahev learned is a couple techniqes on how to keep the dpu down. most of which i still have trouble applying.
my main problem is that i love combi patches and almost always use them instead of singal mods like the mealstrom or substarctur, thous cousing my heavy use on the dpu.

i hope that can help anyone with similar problems
