if you drive a car you would know that the smallest thing can create chaos on a highway and spill in residential streets. Things have to be studied by traffic engineers and not architects.

that's what the EA is for. plus i don't think anyone has mentioned that it should be done by architects. i'm not sure where you got that from.

I think it looks empty because it's just after a choke point. Both the Gardiner and the DVP effectively end there. It's similar to what you see when any 1-lane road widens into 2 lanes - for a while it feels empty because of the way traffic disperses.

This is a natural consequence of any geography that's not a grid or tree. In fact, they took advantage of this when building the Bayview extension; since there generally aren't many cars left on it by the time you get past River St, they only built one lane. Of course, years later, that lane can get pretty slow at certain times of day, and it would still cause a lot of problems if they just tore down that last stretch.

Traffic systems are networks and are subject to all of the inherent problems of networks. It's very dangerous to draw any conclusions from a single stretch working in isolation.

(Actually, traffic systems are slightly different from than normal networks in the sense that you don't get to choose the routes, the drivers choose their own... but that makes the problem worse, not better)

I think that stretch is empty simply because of all the other entry points on the DVP (from Adelaide, Gerrard, there are a few from the east side in that area), and from lakeshore travelling westbound, how it starts the Gardiner from the east side. There are so many ways to get on and around in that pocket (Gardiner stretch from DVP to Jarvis) that closing off that on-ramp from the DVP will not cause as much chaos as it's being expressed here. Take it from someone who takes that route during morning/evening rush hour at least twice a week.

this has nothing to do with living downtown...i live in maple and commute into the beaches area every day....i either take the 404 Or the 401 to 427 to gardner..depending on my mood..so i KNOW about traffic on our highways..

this is about revitalization..we talk about being world class...unforutanately, our waterfront being in the condition it is in..we are falling a little short of this mark..

they are not proposing to tear down the whole highway..it is a section from jarvis to the dvp that is ALWAYS empty..i travel on it at least three time a week...will it create some problems?..potentially..but it will not be chaos as some on here are predicting..

The CN Tower is aging and looking a bit ugly. Apparently it affects bird migration. I think it may be time to tear it town. Agreed?
