i might get the black macbook caus i realy need a laptop anyway and i could probably see if logic is what i want later to then get a workstation mac. i guess its run Reason pretty simple as i managed to run it on 512mb Ram AMD Athlon XP1500 before (1,34GHz, 1 Core). Then i could try logic to see if its good and if i realy need a workstation. I dont like the macbook pro, looks like it could break easily. Any advice on how to get discounts on macs? also does it exists free FTP progs for mac? openoffice does that work on mac? another thing. is it possible to somehow "upgrade" the macbooks when better processors, ram etc will be avaliable?

Nothing could be further from the truth. MacBook Pro's are aluminum where as the regular MacBook is made of plastic. If anything, the regular MacBook is more likely to break.

Only work for a corporation that provides them. I got an 8% discount from the Apple store simply my showing my badge.

Yes. Filezilla is an outstanding FTP client, and its free. Google it.

Yes, but Microsoft Office for Mac is much better and very cheap. Only $150. I think the Student and Teacher edition is only $99.

Ram is not upgradable in a MacBook, because it comes with 2GB, and the motherboard only supports a maximum of 2GB. It IS upgradable in a MacBook Pro to 4GB.

Processors are not upgradable in any laptop, Apple or otherwise.

Yes it is. You can get 4GB in a MacBook.

Don't waste money on the black MacBook. Just get the 2.4Ghz White one. Why pay 200 extra bucks for 90GB of hard drive space?

Why pay an extra 700 for a 15" widescreen and a fancy video card? Unless you're gaming on it, it isn't worth it.

If we're talking Apple laptops only, The best deal is the 2.4Ghz MacBook with the 160GB drive. Upgrade the RAM if you feel so inclined.

DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK NOW!!!!

Very soon, apple are going to bring out a completely range of laptops, and early info is that the entire range will be made of metal, like the macbook pros. They are also going to have greatly updated processors.

Only buy a mac book now if you just can't live without one right now.

3F05Q, You're right about the black macbook being a proportionate waste of money compared to the the standard white one....but if you look at the way programs are being coded, graphics usage is becoming more intensive and with the way that most computers are now expected to be able to handle very advanced graphic operations, you seriously do not want this to element of the program to be a drain on your processor (i.e. with shared graphics in a macbook). The larger screen is also nice when using music progs for obvious reasons. Not saying you can't use a smaller screen, but the larger is more suitable.

My advice is to wait for the new macbooks, get one of those or save a great deal of $$$ on the macbook pro older models on a closeout sale.

Yeah I bought a Macbook Pro about 2 weeks before they released a new version!! Fact is though, you can wait and wait and wait but there comes a point where you have to make a decision - technology is constantly evolving so we'll never be on top for long..

For the record, my switch to Mac OSX was the best thing i've done for both personal, work, and music! My workflow has improved substantially as I love OSX. Logic Pro 8 is also superb. The on board synths are class and the learning curve is not too steep initially...

Anyway, good luck in your decision!

PS. I would go for a MBP rather than MB - the graphics/ram thing as previously mentioned does make a difference (and my 1920x1200 screen resolution is amazing)

AD.

You can cross PC/Mac mice and keyboards.

The only real difference is the "Command" key, which is replaced by the "Windows" key if using a "PC" keyboard.

This is very true, but you're best to buy when either they have just brought out a new model, as that will have the longest life in terms of value and performance, or get the the older version at this point. The worst thing you can do is buy it just over a month before the new ones come out as you will not get a discount in many cases.

I wouldn't pay money just to test out OSX.
