minimal bores me..and it's frustrating that so many dj's have jumped on this bandwagon....i don't know if they're just playin it safe...i hope the trend passes fast and soon...!

its taken me a while to take on this fad although i still havent fully embraced it. i agree that the "techno" sound has become rampant however, as stated earlier, thats just how the scene moves, from one "genre" to the next. I find it amusing how so many people can just suddenly switch gears. many friends HATE electro yet just 4-5 months earlier, they couldn't live without it. I find it hard to believe that their tastes could sour so quickly. Im a fan of all genres and keep my binder up to date with techno/minimal,techhouse, tribal, electro, and progressive. obviously not everyone can enjoy so many types of house at one time or can they..........

Electro was the EDM scene in Toronto for years. It’s all about the sound evolving. Techno / Minimal tracks seem to be the best tracks being put out. It’s not like every city is pumping out all techno these days. I was just in Chicago for the long weekend, all they play down there is hard bleepy electro. I think progressive and funky house will come back in the next few years. Djs / producers normally pick one direction in order to evolve there own sound.

The point being is that Toronto has a large variety of sounds being produced and played in the clubs. Pick and choose your destination accordingly people. Make / Play your own music and stop complaining.

The danceability of minimal has little to do with BPM. Techno/Minimal can be boring a fuck at 130+bpm - but the "unz" of it tends to be fast enough that I'll 'move because there is a beat going fast' not because it's necessarily interesting.

Or, Minimal can be grooving along at a lower BPM (within reason obviously, not going to rock out to an 80bpm track), but the elements going on are interesting enough to get me moving. But, it has to be GOOD and INTERESTING. A two-note ping-pong baseline and a click, that is not very interesting.

I'd agree. There is too much tech-house and bad techno being played. Although, I'm finding that even in the DJ sets that I'm downloading online these days, that so many sets are leaving me a bit bored, so I dont think it's just a Toronto thing.

There are a few local DJs that seem to be pretty popular, but have made me leave the dance floor on more than one occasion.

I'd love to hear some straight up techno, or a proper minimal set get played - here's hoping Alex Smoke can deliver this weekend.

The past while I've been geeking out either over the RPR Soundsystem guys, or back to late 90s techno/minimal or stuff within that 'vibe' - Dan Bell, Sleeparchive, Donk Boys, Kooky Scientists, or straight up minimalism/glitch (Shako recordings, Alva Noto, etc) - of which most of isn't very dance friendly at all, but some pretty good listening music.

No, there is not too much. I'm loving the techno sound that has been dominating many sub-genres of EDM lately. It's not like he/she who wants to listen only to a certain sound (e.g. deep house or prog) is finding it difficult to do so; today there is simply an abundance of tracks with a techno influence, which is not to say that as a result non-techno influenced songs are declining.

And Jamie: techno and minimal can co-exist my friend. There will always be that ridiculously hard stuff that you really enjoy, so I say let the rest of us who enjoy a more subtle kind of techno enjoy minimal

Finally, as for the comment that minimal lacks 'danceability': listen to Michael Mayer's 2007 DEMF mix and try telling us that you honestly do not believe that it features a bunch of tunes that get you moving.

Every last detail needs to be tended to to ensure its perfect, or that imperfection will stand out. But say, if your tossing 100 layers on top, running it through loads of effects/filters and has so much going on - those imperfections can easily go un-noticed.

Creating crap minimal (of anything) is easy, creating good minimal is rather hard.

Why do music snobs keep repeating this pathetic old chestnut? Any producer can tell you that it's an absolute crock of shit. Mistakes are obvious no matter how many "layers" there are, no matter how much "fluff" there is, in any work of art, but especially music because our ears are incredibly sensitive to this type of thing.

Minimal music, especially minimal drums without much in the way of a melody, is just safe and lazy production. Any producer who's tried his hand at both will grant this without hesitation. You'd have to try pretty hard to fuck up the rhythm or tuning or EQ or even the mastering with just a couple of drums.

The end result always has to be impeccable in art, no matter how big or small, minimal or detailed it is. Less elements means less opportunity for mistakes.

I wish that the people who have no idea what they're talking about here would stop pretending that they do.
