So I'm in the market for a new camera that can take hella nice pics. Budgets around $800 and maybe a bit higher. The latest 12.2 mp Canon Rebel is all I have looked at so far. Any other ones with at least a 12 mp rating in the price range?

save up and go for the Canon 50D, or wait a bit and there's a few new models coming up in the coming weeks (but maybe none in your price range).

Exactly what I was going to suggest. It is around 1200 for the kit, and it is an EXCELLENT start.

Also, I absolutely despise HDR, but these are a the ones that have changed my mind....but only because you were so subtle.

The 50D is $1399, body only. Add an (average) EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens for a kit price of $1599. Personally I would want to get a different lens such as the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS ($699) or an L model, that would likely push its cost over $2k.

The D90 is $1300 or so for the body plus a really good 18-105 lens.

Just like the 30d and 40d, the MSRP is never what it sells for. You can always find it 2-300 cheaper online in kit form. And while I agree that the EFS 18-200 lens is nice, for someone who has yet to master any of the cameras functions, it is best to start small if not super basic, and move up from there. That 50d will have a lot of things to learn for someone who isn't necessarily used to all the different modes, manual functions, etc.

I would not call the 50D a beginner's camera.. and I would not get a cheap lens for it. That's all I'm saying. I would call the D90 a beginner's camera.

And, the prices I quoted on the 50D are not MSRP:

http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wc...catalogId=10001

I want to modify what I said about the 18-200 tho. I would only recommend it as an "all-around" walk about lens. Although I haven't seen tests for it, if I can go by Nikon's 18-200 offering, the lens has the potential for distortion at the extremeties - it's almost by nature. If you know what kind of shooting you plan to be doing (and you should) I would advise to target a more specific lens for your needs.

ps. I do not mean to discredit the D90 in any way shape or form.. in fact I consider it to be a mini D300. It has many of the same features including the insane 3" 922,000 pixel LCD, the same MP, D-lighting, and furthermore it has the 720p HD movie mode which I do think is more than just a gimmick. In case you haven't seen samples.

if you haven't seen movies taken by the D90, check here:
http://vimeo.com/D90

The mode does have some limitations, 5 mins max at 720p (takes up about 400MB), must use manual focus (watch the videos and see that this is workable), can't take video for prolonged periods (camera gets hot) - would not be using this as a "video camera" anyway.

ps. I will be getting a D90 as soon as I can, to use as a walk-around / daily cam. The 5D + grip + flash is just too big for many occasions and areas.

haha yeah the 5d is quite huge for daily use. 50d or d90 would be the best choice for that.
