has to be a rumour. There's no way MS would try to buy out a competitor to their Win Mobile platform, especially considering the competitor is as large as RIM. Frankly, I don't think MS has enough money to buy em.
I disagree... MS has a long history of buying out competitors. If they were to buy out RIM they would acquire the market leader in smart phone handsets and kill their principle competition to Win Mobile. This would give them control over the manufacture of nearly 30% of smart phones in circulation and an equal increase to Win Mobile's market share by having Blackberry users switch over. Finally, RIM shares are undervalued and undercapitalized right now so they are an attractive target.

You don't acquire a 26 billion company just so Win Mobile has less competition. It's a gigantic waste of money imo.

True, but I'm not suggesting that would be the only reason. At present MS doesn't manufacture smart phones... if they were to purchase RIM they would become the market leader in smart phones. That's why they would acquire a 26 billion dollar company. The fact that RIM is undervalued just adds more incentive.
I'm not saying that MS will do this, just that it's not an outlandish idea.

MS apparently has 23 billion in cash so they won't have to acquire debt to purchase them.
Are admitting that RIM is a waste of a company and cannot provide any added value if MS were to acquire them?
And yes, I would pay $26B for less competition, especially if it'll give you majority market share and a huge lead ahead of Google & Apple.
It's easier to acquire someone else's product then to innovate your own.

High-speed hungry Canadians will soon have a new option when seeking out a wireless carrier. This morning, TELUS officially announced its plans to get rolling on a 4G network with a target launch sometime in early 2010. That’s right people, our pals north of the border will be feasting on 4G data in just over a year while we’re probably still angry that all the iPhone 3Gs out there are dropping throughput to EDGE-like speeds. TELUS CEO snippet time:
This technology evolution is a win for Canadian consumers. TELUS’ investment in next generation wireless services will give our clients more wireless functionality including; international roaming, fast network speeds and a compelling selection of globally-compatible handsets and devices. As the next evolution in our multi-network strategy, this initiative will position TELUS to actively participate in the future global LTE eco-system and leverage economies of scale, offer timely access to handsets, and enhance global roaming relationships and revenues.
Through a revised agreement with Bell, TELUS will be using the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz spectrum and both Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei will be providing the LTE gear. The entire project is expected to run TELUS about $750 million.

So I just spoke to someone from Telus.
Apparently the Storm is going to be quite pricey. It's a world phone, plus it's their new baby. The person I spoke to is saying the price point will be more than the 8830 world edition.. snap.
I'm probably still going to get the thing, but man..
