Ranes are great, but I can't imagine mixing without filters anymore.

I use filters way more than EQs. And with rotaries the levels are so much easier to control I don't need them. Now back to filters.

That's interesting - IMO Rotaries generally are fine but the urei has no gains and no eq (separate unit) and the knobs move slowly (resistance). They're actually a nightmare if you like to do fast or multichannel cuts while mixing, but they do sound nice though.

I don't really see how having good volume control can completely eliminate the need to for EQ's.

DJM are not great at all, because they don't sound that good in the first place and the moment you redline them, they turn in to an absolute piece of shit. I know several live engineers that just dread the night ahead when the DJ demands a DJM - you know they don;t really know what they're doing and therefore chances are they are exactly the type of person that's going to redline it and make the situation even worse.

A&H are nice but Vestax, Urei and Bozak are the real choice if you're serious.

Anyone ever used E&S mixers or isolators?

That's pretty much exactly what I said well if you're referencing rotaries. The huge knobs and the resistance make them easier to control IMO.

Honestly I've never needed to use EQs if I can control the volume that is all I really need.

Yep DJMs are trash, but I don't see what that has to do with what I posted. I don't even think about Pioneers when I think of mixers.

As far as I've seen from the parties I've been to this year almost everyone is using A&H Xone 92s and I can't blame them.

Sorry, I was also referring to other's earlier posts in this thread about DJM's.

But if you're someone that uses EQ's (and many of us do and in moderation) nice slow volume control isn't going to make me not wish they were there, that's all.

I am just still perplexed as to how many people will shell out a $1000+ for DJM's when they are so flawed.

Hey everyone! Imo DJMs aren't flawed especially the newer ones. They just mix the sound differently.
I have a djm600 and a Xone:32.. to me the djm in more punchy and the Xone is quite smooth sounding. The Xone is more forgiving with volume control and I tend to mix more with the eqs.. the Djm requires careful volume control or your mixes can get very cluttered.
Just my thoughts

So the DJM sucks? I knew it.

Depends on the person at the controls.. any tool can make a djm look/sound bad, its the person that can make the most of whatever equipment they have that interests me. Another way to look at it is to compare a djm to a numark or behringer equivalent.. then you'll know what it really means to suck.
To finish.. I'd like to see more focus on improving the sound systems in clubs instead of just pointing fingers at "xyz" mixer.

That's a good point. If you make an effort to keep a DJM out of the red, it's a whole different story. Unfortunately, EVERY DJ I've ever seen out is redlining them all the time.

EDIT: And btw, I'll take one order of "The Beast" in that link above.

i agree, but the sound begins partly with the mixer and the djm sounds like shit sorry.
