I mean if ur banging a chick and she says "suck my nipples" ur gonna suck them right? And if the crowd says "top 40" u should do the same...

I can play to any crowd... Give me a top 40, I'll kill it. Put me in a dance club and I'll house it. Wedding? No problem... I DJ for people, not myself...

Maybe you should just start producing

See, that's what I am talking about. I DJ for myself, and I know it. I don't like to play out unless it's in an environment conducive to dance music. However there are many people I know who think "Oh, he's a DJ, he should play here," who just don't get that being a DJ doesn't necessarily mean I am doing it for the money, I am doing it for the love of the music. I am starting to tolerate Top 40 stuff more and more, but how on Earth does one go about mixing it? I presume mixing isn't really a necessity because the average top 40 lover doesn't care about mixing. And yes, I would suck her nipples.

I agree. You don't like hip-hop... well then leave it to the DJs who do. Either approach it as a job and play what people want because that is what you are getting paid to do, or approach it as an artist and spend years developing a sound and searching for an audience who appreciates the sound you are putting forth. But don't expect to have both of those at the same time.

yeah but as someone above said...a top 40s crowd really does not give a shit about ur mixing...i played a set last friday which was technically the worst set i have ever played...and over a hundred ppl came and said "great job"...and i played another set on saturday which was technically brilliant and no one said anything...u cant do much with top 40s music...because firstly everyone wants to hear the whole song, unmodified, so they can sing along and do all the moves they see on mtv. most of the time u end up being a living, breathing iPod instead of a DJ

You can get funky with top 40 but instead of the normal tricks its more dropping accapellas over another top 40 beat and subtle hints.

Albeit iPods cant beatmatch and pick the right song to go into next...

But yea for any top 40 crowd your pretty much just whatever is on the radio right now with a few throwbacks sprinkled here and there

If you buy two copies of the same record they usually come with an instrumental, and this way you can extend it long enough to mix out of.

I make sure I always get two copies of the same record for this reason.

If you're using CDs, a place like a Plan 9 Music will have some weekly/monthly compilation called X-Mix (or something close). It has the latest top hits plus their bpms.
