I'd have to hear how the sound was at parade. If I'm standing in a sea of people listening to minimal treble and feeling no bass, I'd probably leave.

I really do question the effectiveness of minimized music being played in a concert format....just seems bizarre

If that's not hedonistic, then I don't know what is. For me, that's the best bit about dance culture. I hate the “harder than thou” attitude with rock music and the “I’m a gangsta” thing with rap. Many types of music have similar cultures and expectations as to how people should look and act.

Dance music’s appeal for me (and many others) has been about the freedom to be who you want (besides the fact that the music itself is awesome). While there is a lot of focus on image in some clubs, on the whole, dance music lets you be who you really are and just be there to enjoy things. It’s hedonism at it’s best.

When asked what my religion is, I sometimes tell people I’m “hedonist” as a joke, though I suppose I’m not far off. I don’t believe in god and I do pretty much whatever I please.

As for your comments about electronic music in Germany, this may well be true, but it certainly doesn't apply to the rest of the world. The very first clubs in New York and Northern England were built on the ideals of massive excess and doing whatever the fuck you wanted.

this is actually interesting, many points you mention are frowned upon by people who are deep-rooted in the "scene" over here. without being offensive, maybe its different where you live? i have no idea where that is since your profile doesnt tell, but maybe there is an insufficient supply of good electronic music and thus people have to enjoy every possibility to get out and waste themselves?

i think the disengagement of ones environment and daily problems is more a trance or handbag-house syndrome where people use the music as a catalyst to forget everyday life and get drunk and mate and have fun. this, again no offense, might apply to new york and other hip places, but certainly not for places like detroit or berlin which had hard times in the history (economical downturn, berlin wall) and whose musical history is based upon disappointed individuals and their way of coping with life.

Wait, I thought music wasn't supposed to push an agenda or message. Hedonism counts. Conforming to non-conformity is still conformity, etc.

It seems to me that you're still saying "dance music shouldn't be ________, it should be ________". I say, let people enjoy dance music for whatever reason it brings them enjoyment.

You must admit though that our kind of music in this country has a much harder time bringing girls out than guys. There are just more dudes who pay attention than girls.

That said, the quality of females in this scene is by far the best of any club scene in the states IMO. I'll take quality over quantity if the alternative is the fake done-up whores we get at Sharam and trance shows.

if anything, it's because most of the people in the scene are musicians, deejays, label owners, etc - all statistically male-dominated.

that said, it always seems like a pretty fair mix of sexes when i go out. hardly a sausage fest. and if there are a lot of guys there, they aren't sexed-up, drunken bafoons - either coked/k-ed out or music lovers.
