I would suggest to you that racial prejudice are simple pre-conceived notions about a person's character/personality based on racial stereotypes whereas racism is discriminatory action taken for or against a person based exclusively on their race. The former being a rather benign and natural method of managing expectations in the absence of other evidence while the latter is an active process of determining how one will act toward another ignoring all factors other then their race.

Oh, I could work with a distinction like that

I'm puzzled by the fact that (s)he said racial prejudice is (also) a kind of racism, so that would make racism 'the belief that races exists' (or something of that sort) and racial prejudice would be 'acting according to the belief that races exist'. But, isn't this way of thinking somewhat circular? And, what would the other forms of racism be?

Racism is a belief that people of a particular race are somehow inferior to another race.

Prejudice is making a decision, a judgement, without taking into account important facts about the situation.

The prejudice in my example is exactly how you described it. They decided that the black people didn't speak properly without knowing all the facts. Such as their background.

However, how do we know that other people in the class can't speak properly? What about foreign students? By singling out black people the person is implying that a particular race is inferior. Since this person is white, we can assume that is the race they are comparing too.

Note: I'm just clarifying my statement. I'm not trying to argue with you.

Rednecks get made fun of all the time. However, rednecks are a subset of the "white" race (can other races be rednecks?) so this does not really apply. If someone said "those white people in my class don't talk right" then we'd be dealing some racism.

I understood what you meant. I just pointed out that, although there's a correlation in that particular case between a group of people and a dialect, so to speak, the issue here is not the fact that they're "black", but how they speak English.

I don't really care about semantics here since I doubt it mattered to the person who said the original quote. What I take from the example is that this particular person singled out a particular race and made a negative comment about them. It's the nature of the comment and the thought process that went into it.

I think I've made myself clear so i'm done trying to explain this example.

Note taken. Just for clarification, I'll be using these definitions from now on.

Well, they heard them speaking, right? That's all the background you need to find out whether they're using the so-called Standard English or Black Vernacular English

Given how arbitrary linguistic prejudice tends to be, it's not hard to understand why some people give foreigners a break. Even though I imagine foreign students can be mocked for their English nearly as much, it's also obvious that this is not their first language. A Vietnamese student, for example, may suck at English, but she probably speaks better Vietnamese than all other students combined

That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't some dense individuals out there who think you ought to speak a language "perfectly" the day you move to a different country.

Would this person blame this "inability " to speak English on something inherent to being black?

Out of curiosity: I'm discussing with you because I find this entertaining. If you think this is annoying, just tell me right away, and I will bug you no more

Even if it's a white person saying that? And, wouldn't that be a social, rather than a racial, prejudice? It seems to me your lumping everything together under an umbrella term. I just looked "redneck" up on a dictionary and a redneck are "a poor white person without education, especially one living in the countryside in the southern US, who has prejudiced (= unfair and unreasonable) ideas and beliefs". So, can a white person make fun of a redneck - when the only difference between them is social - and be accused of racism?
