I have always loved board games: Stratego, Risk, Battleship, Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, Chess, Othello, Pictionary. I haven't played them in a long time, but as much fun as they were, they seemed to always create bad fights and bitter animosity between my siblings and friends. Risk and Monopoly being the worst because those group games inevitably lead to ganging up on the weakest player to for him out of the game. Funny now that I think of it that's how the COR works too.

(yes, it's a hobby)

If you like party games, try:

Apples to Apples
Wits & Wagers
Say Anything
Time's Up! (a form of Celebrities)

If you want a bit more meat try:
Ticket to Ride
Carcassonne
Ingenious

If you like games like Risk/Stratego, try:
Arkham Horror
Fury of Dracula
Descent: Journeys in the Dark

The main trick-taking card game we play is Tichu.

Monopoly is a mess.
I think Scrabble is just an exercise of memorization.
Boggle is decent, but I suck at word games.
Risk and Axis and Allies are good.
Scotland Yard is excellent.
Taboo is good.

I am going to buy a copy of Stratego this week and force friends and family to play against me.

People are shit these days, no one has the patience or inclination to play. Even when they do, I'm so fucking good that they refuse to face me thereafter.

Has anyone played Scruples? Great game for a heated argument.

Risk!

Anyone here is playing it at Conquerclub? I've been playing it there for few years now, ever since the launch of the site. (It's nice because you have 24 hours time to take the turn so you're not really tied to the game.)

Fuck that! Games would take a year to end. The beauty of Risk on the computer is that turns take 30 seconds rather than five minutes.

Play this instead: http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/conquest.html

I'll be nice, since it's your birthday and all.

Board games can be heaps of fun, you just have to find the right kind of people to play them with. Good friends, a few beers, and a board game is great fun.

It's highly social.

I think that would be a rather large difference from online gaming, no?

Of course, a few mates around playing multiplayer games on a console (or a LAN) is heaps of fun too, but less social. The game requires everyone to focus on their own little 'game world'.

Or am I wrong?

Actually more like under 10 days on average. Of course depends on how fast other people take turns... maybe 10 games out of the ~400 games I've finished there have dragged over month.

Somehow the games there usually end pretty soon, propably because there are not much totally clueless players around, and the turtlers usually get taken care of.

do me a favor - don't be nice. because it's even more annoying to read that you are being nice to the pathetic unfunny boris_the_pedo because it's some fucking birthday. you're not really that significant to me that i require your mercy on my birthday. no offense, dude sorry.

on the subject: i socialize by talking with people, not by being engaged in a board or computer game. and i don't play online. only single player skirmishes
