As for it helping the scene grow...it made it dwindle to nothing compared to what it was before. Politics, cut throat promoting tactics, sketchy druggies and suppliers (who haven't the slightest clue about the music or dj's spinning). Add to that, the internal politics of not letting big acts play at smaller venues. Crappy Radio stations that hire a voice to act like he really is a dj rather than just an announcer. All this ruined the scene. Oh and let's not forget the angry unpleasant ignorant old folks who hate this music and seeing kids happy or the cops wanting a big cut of the massive $$$$ pie to play security gods at big and small venues. This is why this scene lacks lustre and def doesn't need Z103.

The damage is done indeed!

you must be new to the scene... we had radio shows on 103.5 and 107.9 back in the mid 90's... some with live to airs. energy 108 did a live to air from a betterdays warehouse rave in 1998 for fucks sake.

back then hardly anyone knew who the DJ was. They would come to here someone just because they were being billed as from the UK or another city... waaaaaay more people are in tune to what's going on now.

and don't even get me started on all the shady promters and whatnot that used to go on. Sure people were lovey dovey at parties back then, but that's because they were on fuckin pills... pills that in many cases the promoters had people selling for them so they could make even more money. I'll leave out all shit about DJs getting ripped off by clubs and promoters to.

so ya.. to sum it up, you don't know what you're talking about.

oh.. and raves are not illegal on city property, nor are their bylaws regarding all night dance parties.

The reason people stopped doing them is because of the costs involved. the city required a certain amount of security to be hired as well as an excessive amount of paid duty police to be on hand.

in addition, because it's city property you have to use their union guys to do the set up. who are over paid, slow and lazy. so you get dinged twice. sounds techs and city guys.

Rent at city venues was actually quite reasonable, security and sound was not.

There isn't a single full hour of electronic music, during day time hours, on major canadian radio station (set aside college/university radio). Yeah, there's bpm tv, but that's the only place on the televizzle you can getyour dose.

as for sponsors...
bacardi b-live stage at V-Fest
Hienekin music events
Red Bull has sponsored dance music events

what damage could have possibly be done by playing music on the radio?

HI!!!! *waves both hands*
Realtalk.
Stop being selfish.
If you like EDM, Z103 actually does not affect your love or appreciation of said tunes...long before this radio station had a contract with Guv people were complaining about all sorts of things: system soundbar closing, the scene dying, drugs not being as potent, people diluting the scene and before that other other people were complaining about whatever the hell they wanted to to make them feel elite (or what made them feel nostalgic about the parties they attended)

Really, embrace the cheese....it's the last necessary step before pop. Hip hop went through it...so will EDM. Not saying it is good nor bad, but just accept it!!!
Dtraighten out your noses!!!!

First...the word is spelled "hear" but that's beside the point now.

Evan...you and I have met soooo many times but I'll admit half the time you were so out of it, that it's no wonder you can't remember who I am.
I've been in and out of the business and scene since childhood. Both in the U.S.A. and here.

The question of more people being in tune to what's going on now is not the issue. Try to stay focused.
IMO <----(note this) IMO Z103 was not the best way to promote our scene. End of point.

Unless you've been active in the law...(trying to change it, as I have) then don't give an opinion as if you know anything about what goes on in City Hall etc. Granted, you are correct about the cost factor....but then I mentioned it long before you did. Had you of been involved then I would of seen you at the Rave Rally or at the other meetings held in and out of City Hall but you were no where in sight.
Still in place:
City to deter Raves --> http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cachegPwhW2596oJ:www.djdoubled.com/citysurveycanada.pdf+is+raves+illegal+in+city+of+toronto&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=ca
City of Toronto

If you disagree...then just disagree....rather than try to come across as if you've been in this business or scene longer than others...cuz not only is it not kewl the way you responded but you are so outnumbered in years by many of us tranceaddicts, including myself.

Oh and if your going to mention shady promoters...then maybe it's time to take a look at shady dj's or dj/promoters who are; wasted on the drug of their choice, so full of hot air thinking they are so great, insisting on not-being booked as the starter guy, and demanding to be paid more than what they are worth or even attract (by way of fans)to a gig.

I didn't post "AN OPINION" on TA to get sucked into drama or be disrespectful or catty to other TAs'...I'm here because this is where music people get feedback, express themselves, and learn from others about what's going on in the scene

this is the exact reason why promoters stopped doing raves....the security and paid duty police reqirements that became ridiculously costly...i'm not sure of the ratio that they accepted prior to the change and what it was afterwards....

I love how me pointing out that you were wrong turns into you trying to take shots at my "pull" as a DJ,

I guess you think the same about Greg Gow, Joee Cons, Kotov & Wilde, and everyone else that was playing your event to which no one showed?

regarding my knowledge of "the scene", I'm not the be all an end all of Toronto rave trivia nor do i claim to be, but i do have more inside knowledge then most. Aside from my 10 years of involvement, I happen to be friends with the people that used to run Toronto, including the organizers of idance. I've got the lowdown from the guys that used to do the mega raves. I'm pretty sure their facts are a little more accurate that yours.

and yeah.. back to the original topic, mainstream radio play is a good thing, and it's not a new thing in Toronto. There's actually far less of it now then ever

I remember Wayne Williams (who's now the program director at flow) on energy 108 playing house during the afternoon drive in the late 90's.

Flow currently has a House show with Tricky Moreira.

We used to have Tripping on Energy on energy 108 with Flipside.

There was The Dr. Trance show on 107.9 and then Hot 103.5 and Power 88.5

Don Berns, Deadley Headly used to sneak to play some beats back in the old CFNY days

Edge 102.1 even played essential mixes on Saturday nights from 2-4am for a 3 or 4 month period in the late 90's. Unfortunately they didn't advertise it so no one listened.

and of course, lets not forget Chris Sheppard's Pirate Radio Sessions which was syndicated across Canada.
