Couldn't agree more. I got in to dance music right at this point and didn't really realise at the time how special it was until lokking back in retrospect. Eye-q, Jackpot, VC, cyber records, junior boys own, (plus too many more) were such a great labels and put out an astounding level of quality for a good few years.

It's great that there are like minded people out there that have a shared passion for what was a great period of music (before the jp )

I dont follow you, I said house / trance collided and you got stuff like epic house and then trance came with with big uplifting breakdowns. I remember the variations of house: hi-nrg, handbag house, epic and this is where it met up with trance to start soundng alot more like it is now. You might have had melody / riffs but they weren't as dominant as they are now. They can come and go not really building up / down but just plating on as it wasnt about 'linear progression'.

Theres been alot of development through the years and I was about during the goa trance explosion of 94/95. I used to go to hybernation, pendragon escape from samsara and I loved it. Or even the early hard trance stuff I used to listen to in the technodrome in helterskelter like Joyrider - The Deadline on Bonzai 94 and The First Rebirth on Bonzai. This is a good example as the song is from about 94 if i remember right and its a classic trance style very diff to the red jerry hooj tune remix that came later and is similar to trance as we know it.

Nope, although that one is good as well. Look for Tilt - I Dream (extended resurrection mix). Make sure it is the extended version. Its one of my favorite tracks.

Generally i just want to say that the Trance music back in those days was better simply because producers didnt have a reference point to how they wanted to sound. It was all just pure accidental and inspirational.

Well, you didn't say that - you said that "trance was a subgenre of techno", which it isn't.

What I'm saying is that Epic house WAS the form of melodic dance music that later got called "trance", not that there was this thing called (epic)house that eventually "collided" with trance.

Epic house was the huge breakdowns!!

One (epic house) became the other (trance) and the true form of epic house (super lush melodies, long vocals, long, complex tracks etc.) over time gave way to the simpler form of what became "trance".

Trance was a simpification of the epic house sound. Also, hi nrg, handbag and epic were all around before (90-96) the "trance" name got applied to cover what was uplifting dance music in general (epic house included). Linear progression isn;t the defining element - trance, progressive house, psytrance and epic house all did this in one form or another.

you went to escape from Samsara? Me too!!!! loads of times when they were in london!!!!! Those were the days Small world.....
But the wierd thing is that you call it "goa" trance - back then, that music WAS called trance and is a very different beast from what became labeled trance in 98 and beyond.

RANN: trance existed before epic house. Trance was originally formed in Germany around 1990/1991 at the same time progressive house was formed in the UK. The early German trance was descended from techno, although it had plenty of other influences (ambient, acid house).

Progressive house morphed into epic house for a while when DJs like Sasha began to mix prog house with the more extravagant Renaissance-flavoured vocal house. When the German trance of the early 90s began to make its way across to the UK in the mid-90s it did collide with epic house, and so the melodic, extravagant, intricately produced sound of epic house and the simpler, more repetitive, less melodic trance sound fused. That fusion became progressive trance which lead to modern trance.

There are loads of tracks, compilations, interviews etc. using the word "trance" in the early 90s to refer to a mostly German collection of music. That is the original trance. Progressive trance is so named because it was the meeting of progressive house (epic house) and trance.
