It's definitely not for the financially unsettled.
I used to volunteer at an orphanage in Taipei and they had nothing but success with middle class to upper middle class western couples wanting to adopt kids from overseas (America, Canada, Australia, UK, Holland, etc.). Yes there are a few requirements of the parents (have to be financially sound, physically healthy) but it's not an insanely expensive and stressful process. There are unfortunately a lot of babies and infants in Asia that get tossed to orphanages and temples (if a couple has twins it's considered unlucky as even numbers are bad luck, light physical disfigurements, father was a western guy who impregnated an asian girl, took off and she chose not to get an abortion, etc.) |
I have a friend who adopted twice from Russia and it was a VERY expensive ordeal. Not only the process and paper work, but travelling to Russia 2 or 3 times over several months added up.
All in, it cost him about $45,000-$50,000 each time.
