I used to listen to EDM all day everyday, but there are phases of burn out (and crap tracks lately).
Ive started digging through my CDs and picked up mos def - black on both sides and man, i miss when hip hop was like this. Its really hard for me to like newer hip hop and rap, its all about the bass and less about the lyrics. Its even harder for me to listen to top 40. I remember when just dance came out and i was listening to what shes saying and its all "DOO DOO DOO DOO just dance." Or worse.. womanizer womanizer womanizer womanizer womanizer....
Ive started relistening to Kings of Leon (not their new album), Cut Copy, Gogol Bordello, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, and Shiny Toy Guns in the car. EDM is for home and the club.
My mp3 player is full of random albums haha. I like music, not genres. |
KINGS OF LEON ROCKS! haha I love EDM, but I get my hip hop, r&b & pop/rock fix once in a blue. Like on Saturday I was home and i was on youtube listening to old school hip hop & r&b for about a good 2 hours and got my fix haha.

Someone sent me a private message this morning, and I wanted to anonymously share it because his words were so SPOT ON, that he took the words right out of my mouth. He said what I was thinking and wanted to say, but didn't know how to express in words. (I already mentioned to him that I'm posting it on here).
| quote: | hi julia, i just wanted to give you my 2 cents worth about your post. what you said really resonated with me. especially this part: "With EDM, I almost feel like it was pulling wool over my eyes. I would sort of "escape" into the music and escape from problems (ie money, career, health, etc) rather than dealing with them (if that makes any sense). I would listen to EDM, and just hours would go by, and when I turned the music off, I would come back to reality without accomplishing anything."
i think you are the one who used to have a sig that said something about music being really important or vital to life and that you felt sorry for people who didn't realize that. i might be getting you confused with someone else, but i remember that sig because at one time i completely agreed with it. but as time went on i began to actually feel sorry for whoever would think that. don't get me wrong, i dearly love music. music has the power to make you feel emotions and sensations that you would never feel otherwise. some of the strongest, and most wonderful moments in my life have been a result of music. but EDM is unique in that it can be quite hypnotic, and for some it can almost be like a drug. it can pull you into a "false world" where the pressing matters of the "real world" become marginalized. this is part of the reason that people love EDM, but for some it can go too far. i can totally understand (from my own experience) how EDM can serve as a vehicle of "escape."
the last couple of years have been really hard for me. i've been dealing with many of the same issues that you are dealing with (money, career, health) as well as feelings of guilt, loneliness, regret, depression, and confusion. i also feel that i haven't nearly accomplished enough in my life thus far. i'm trying to deal with these issues and keep things in perspective. music is still something i get great enjoyment from, but i now try not to get too lost in it to the point where it hinders my life (or purposely use it as a distraction). i'm now just trying to see the "big picture" and to be more focused on the realities of life that i have neglected for so long. from one person with personal struggles to another, i sincerely hope things are working out better for you these days. |
YES EXACTLY! Thank you for your PM
And yes, my signature on TA used to be "Music is life. Life is love. Love is music. Music is life".
On Myspace, I used to have "Music is my love, life, happiness, passion, religion, meditation, medication, escape, hobby, and drug. If you can't relate to me... I feel sorry for you".
LMAOOOOOO!!! I'm so glad I'm over that part of my life... and now I can focus on what I believe life is supposed to be.

Main reason why I dont listen to trance anymore, It does put you in the position of escape with very little thought input, it puts blinders on you with no enlightment. And I guess thats why many have "graduated" from trance, to slower tempo stuff with more space like techno and deep house, music that lets you think a bit and helps pass time enjoyably. Earlier, I said trance has the attributes and dynamics of pop music, which is part of why its famous, but techno and deep house allow you to actually think, even though the energy from it is still fairly normalized throughout (very few breakdowns.) With that said, you don't have to stop listening to EDM to be able to focus on life, just change things up, as everyone has mentioned there is plenty of good music out there in other genres. And more than likely even if you stop one thing, you will replace with something else to occupy your mind. There is always television, the computer, cellphones/texting, we seem to attach ourselves to something at all times, and neglect more important things, usually something human or natural. This is why I talk about enslavement...we are truly enslaved by technology and other materials that are not of natural existence or purpose.

I guess in all honesty, its best for someone like yourself to not be around edm. Even from looking at comments on here from those that know you, its seems you had more of a connection with the edm "scene", rather than the music itself. I believe that's obvious. Like ive said five times in this thread...its a good thing your listening to other music than edm. There's not a single dj or edm producer on the planet that doesn't themselves as well. Music is music. Everyone on here for the most part is obviously someone that knows you somewhat well and are only commenting on the issue of its ok to listen to different music and are ignoring the fact you degraded this musics culture. Hell i listen to everything from Bjork to the Artic Monkeys, Atmosphere to the Postal Service, Company Flow to Jack Johnson and everything in between. I agree and support you 2000 percent in enjoying the world of music in its entirety. Bashing this musics culture cause your immediate friends are druggies and you've suddenly discovered the beauty of other music is a no no though. Your on trance addict of all places, and its common sense someone other than your immediate group was gonna say something against your jaded views you stated. Everyone's comments to you on here are so ridiculous it makes me laugh. Basically saying " its ok, lets forget this edm thing and go live life, take camping trips and ride bikes, enjoy good foods and be happy" like people who listen to edm are exempt from living life and enjoying themselves, only to be confined to druggy association that prohibits them from enjoying life's beauty. That's beyond absurd on too many levels to discuss. To listen to other music and live life = right. To bash this music and culture cause you've suddenly found other music enjoyable and want to do new things = wrong.

Most modern Pop and Rock music is manufactured crap.
Exactly what they want you to listen to, thousand of songs about rejection, heartbreak, sex, drugs and rock and roll.
that is just my opinon on top40, I just filled my ipod with a bunch of non edm melecholy and indie rock and a dogs and cats barking to the beatles album...
I agree with this
| quote: | Like I mentioned in my original post, it's so unmotivating for me to be around drugs all night. Whether I'm doing it or not, I just don't want to spend my weekends being around it anymore... seeing all the washers with their cracked out faces, hanging out at clubs and having conversations with people about how good the pill or K they just did is...

I am so fucking sick of Avalon.. I am going to break that, real soon.. I hate to not be there creating images, but I cant walk and just experience.. with some CRasian whipping their sweaty fucking hair in my face.
edit: yet again:
I think Julia made a similar comment a few years ago, when the last depeche mode album was released.
yea, listening to that really makes everything much more simplified.

Ok, to make it simple (again)...
I don't like going to events, clubs, bars, lounges, hotel parties or whatever else that caters to EDM anymore... because unfortunately, a majority of people are fucked up either on drugs or wasted off alcohol. I don't want to spend my nights or weekends at these events anymore, because I don't enjoy being around it. I don't want to have meaningless conversations with people over loud music. I'm not bashing anything... I'm stating a fact about the EDM scene (not the drug scene) is not my style anymore. I'm willing to not go to these events anymore and miss out on all my old favorite DJ's and producers (maybe I'll go out a couple times a year if it's really worth it - if it's a DJ/producer that I really respect and can't miss). I'll still listen to it at home once in a while... but I'm not going to spend my weekends to see DJ's at events, clubs, bars, lounges, hotel parties or whatever else anymore.
Hope that made sense and you don't go off on rants anymore... putting me (and my friends who posted in this thread) down.
