No. Volkswagen bought Audi a few years back, but it's not like a Nissan/Infiniti Toyota/Lexus Honda/Acura thing.
Audi has been a subsidiary of VW since the 1960's

Bas, you might be confusing the Audi thing with the purchase of Lambo & Bentley (etc.) a few years ago

Most likely, but that was like 10 years ago
Audi bought Lambo in 1998, and VW bought Bentley the same year.

The companies all share common technologies though, so to say that Audi is basically a Volkswagen with a different shell isn't ridiculous. They do actually share chassis/platforms for some models if I recall correctly?
I'm not a 100% but I recall that the A4 is a Passat and so on.
Many of the Skoda's and Seat's have the exact same parts as many VW's and Audis. Especially the 'regular' parts like oil filters and such share the same part-number.
Octavia -> Passat
Leon - > Golf (?)
Felicia -> Polo
But as an example of how these platform things can be..
Ford Galaxy, VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra have the exact same platform.

One thing I hate about pot is that if I recall something happening five years ago, it was ten. And if it's yesterday, I still might think it's 5 years ago

Reckon you are thinking of the whole Porsche buying up 90+% of VW then screwing over basically most hedge funds (****s) by selling them shorts on shares only they owned so they couldn't buy them back? And making VW at one point the most valuable company in the world? (lulz)
(also it is all owned, basically by a region of Germany)
