even after the loss of komisarek, overall if i look at the 3 guys we replaced on defense with the people we replaced them with we come out better. More puck movement and better pp. (komi can't shoot, and is very weak on the outlet passes. all he is good for is blocked shots and hits, which he is among the best in the league at..markov made him look better than he was)
spacek will address the puck movement giving markov (who imo is easily one of the top 5 overall d men in the nhl) some breathing room.
replace brisbois, bouillon, komi, dandenault and end up with:
markov/spacek
gorges/hamrlik
mara/gill
being pushed by these youngsters
subban/obyrne/weber/
the question mark will be on offense.
camillari/gomez/gionta (although i think cammilieri will play on the 2nd line to make room for a bigger winger to add grit. possibly latendresse or paciorety)
kostistyn/pleknanec/kostistyn
latendress/ lapierre/moen (great gritty line imo!)
pacioretty/metropolit/ laraque/d'agostini/chipchurra/stewart
this team is better rounded then last year imo.
there are also a some great prospects in the pipeline. i can't wait for the season to start!
price/halak/sanford
the goalies will have less shots on goal this year with a better d corps so carey's softmore slump might not mean a thing. Its put up or shut up time. Halak is among the best backups in the league and should have even been considered for number 1 last year, but carey is the golden boy so it did not happen.
ps addin 6 cup rings did not hurt |
I think Gomez, Gionta and Camelarri are a bit a of a question mark, personally. Gomez has been an underperformer since being traded to the Rangers, and Gionta has always been a support player. Camalerri's production died off in the 2nd half of the season last year as well.
It'll come down to chemistry with the already-existing forwards on Montreal. I don't think you're going to see all 3 on the top line either, because I don't think they have the size to compete, the skill? Certainly, but Wellwood (as an example of skill vs size) is one of the best puck-handlers in the league til he gets lightly bumped by anyone bigger than Jason Blake.
I'm happy Toronto ended up with Komi, we need a strong stay-at-home guy on our D corps, too many offensive defensemen on Toronto has hurt us the last 5 years or so. I'm also really excited to see how Kaberle plays with some bigger, tougher guys around to help keep him from getting pasted on the glass every night. When he's on his game, there's no D-man better at the QB position than Kabbie, just wish he'd shoot the puck a little more, he has deadly accuracy and scores goals when he does, which also helps break down the other team's D since they're so used to him being a pass-only player.
No matter how either of our teams do, we can BOTH take solace in the fact that, hey, at least we're not Ottawa
