i wrote something long and deleted it and condensed it.
1) There are rules and they are safer than what the UFC offered 15 years ago, as well as safer than what Japan had to offer.
2) It is a competition and the returning fighters are the ones that see it as such. Street fighters, trouble makers, drama queens usually don't make it very far in competition or the eyes of management.
3) Boxing is almost exclusively targeted on trauma to the head. Yes, MMA looks violent, but it is safer in that the referees are trained to stop a fight when a fighter is out or can no longer defend himself. Boxing referees are trained to stop the fight when a fighter can not defend himself or recover from a moment where he could no longer defend himself. No disrespect to referees of either discipline.
4) There have been 2 deaths in MMA. One happened in Ukraine(?) in an unsanctioned fight, which might have well been a street fight. The fighter was not required to take a health examination, and after being knocked out, he died. It was later realized he had a brain tumor. The second happened recently (maybe last year in New Jersey?). He was knocked out at a sanctioned event. I believe he had brain surgery in his medical history, but was cleared to fight by a doctor who presumed enough time had relapsed.
A lot more people have died or have received permanent brain damage as a result of boxing.
5) boxing is fixed.
